    Duties

    Summary

    This position is located in Grand Teton National Park, within the Science & Resource Management Division.

    Open to the first 50 applicants or until 06/19/2020 whichever comes first. All applications submitted by 11:59 (EST) on the closing day will receive consideration.

    Responsibilities

    • Writing of cultural resources sections of resources management plans, archeological reports, and specific action plans pertaining to the management and protection of cultural resources. Conducts reviews under Sections 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
    • Determines research needs and coordinates efforts to meet these objectives through programs, grants, and contracts. Reviews archeological research proposals, scopes of work, contracts, budgets, and tasks while potentially serving as a COR or ATR.
    • Incorporates GIS technology into job using automatic methods of data collection, analysis, and illustration and maintains park cultural resource GIS data.
    • Represents park or program areas on NPS regional task groups or similar organizations. Makes presentations in parks, public gatherings, and professional meetings.
    • Based on results of inventories, in-depth studies, monitoring, and consultation, the incumbent assists with the development and conduct of complex scientifically and culturally credible preservation, mitigation, and restoration projects needed to monitor resources and maintain and/or restore integrity.
    • Collects, analyzes, and synthesizes information from research monitoring, resources management actions, and other sources of information then prepares reports for specific projects.

    Physical Demands: The position may require strenuous physical activity including field surveys and construction site inspection trips and occasional backcountry projects that require hiking and possibly camping for several days. Such trips involve a considerable amount of physical activity, including but not limited to: standing, walking, climbing, lifting objects over 50 pounds, and stooping. Documentary research and report writing work is sedentary, which entails the ability to concentrate and write for long periods of time.Working Conditions: Work is performed primarily in an office environment. Site visits will occur in which work may be performed in all types of weather and conditions, and indoor museum storage areas that are confined and lack windows. Outdoor assignments may be performed in potentially hazardous areas including steep slopes, rocky terrain, and forests. On site visits, incumbent may be exposed to a variety of hazards associated with construction activities, including high noise levels, dust, chemicals, etc. Safety practices are followed in all work environments. Animal encounters are always possible, requiring a high degree of alertness, caution, and knowledge of how to safely use bear spray.

    To qualify for this position at the GS-11 grade level, you must possess both the basic requirement and one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement or you will receive no further consideration for this positionBasic Requirement- successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included 3 semester hours each in the following course areas: History of archeology; Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa; Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development; Theory and methods of archeology (methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques); Archeological field school, provided a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work; AND six semester hours of related course work in geography, geology, or cultural geography; history, historiography, or historical archeology; environmental studies; scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or surveying; AND Archeological field school.- successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in related curriculum obtained at an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics); history; American studies, or a related discipline, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements stated above (including archeological field school).

    • possess a combination of education and experience that provided knowledge equivalent to that described above, plus appropriate additional education or technical experience to total 4 years. This combination must have demonstrated that you possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work of an archeologist comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study.

    • possess four years of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher level archeologist be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project.

    To qualify for this position at the GS-11 grade level, in addition to the basic requirement listed above, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: preparing written reports, memorandums, and letters on national register nominations; researching, collecting and analyzing data pertaining to historic structures or archeological sites; museum experience including completing museum property inventories and subsequent museum database updates; completing condition assessments on historic structures and archeological sites; and updating GIS data and maps coordinating with spatial analysis staff.Your resume must include hours per week worked.-OR-EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph D or equivalent graduate degree (54 semester hours or 81 quarter hours) in an accredited educational institution concentrated in a field that is directly related to the work of this position, in archeology, anthropology, or other directly-related subject matter. You must include transcripts.-OR-

    Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.     This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate.Career-Seasonal Position: This is a Career-Seasonal position and subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal position includes all the benefits of permanent employment, but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. As such, selectee will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. Selectee is guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year. The anticipated non-pay status for this position in the next 12 months is 4 pay periods from February to March 2021, but could be extended based on funding and operational needs.

    The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
