The Oregon Retina division of Sterling Vision is seeking a full-time clinical assistant without prior experience to join a team of people delivering state of the art care to patients in Lane County with blinding eye diseases.

The position is designed to facilitate the transition between college and medical or physician-assistant school.

This is an entry-level position with the opportunity for rapid advancement in knowledge, skill, and pay. On the job training will be provided. The rate of advancement will be determined by the pace at which you learn new knowledge and skills.

The position is ideal for pre-professional students seeking a career in any field of healthcare. Depending on your career goals the doctors and administrative staff can help you find your niche and learn valuable skills for working in the healthcare system. The skills you will learn encompass personal and leadership skill and medical skills.

The leadership and personal skills training include mindfulness, meditation, personal insight, cognitive biases, interpersonal interactions, charisma, negotiation and other skill needed to work with patient and lead teams. The medical skills include how to use clinical and scientific resources to increase your knowledge, interacting with patients, taking a history, consenting patients, diagnostic testing, developing a care plan, charting, insurance issues, and how to execute the care plan in an efficient, safe, and effective manner. You would join a group of other pre-medical and pre-physician assistant students working with us. The doctors and other students provide support and advice for developing your career and leadership skills.

You will start by assisting with getting patients ready to see the doctor and helping with procedures performed in the clinic. As skills develop, you will have increasing responsibility in preparing patients for care by the doctors, performing testing, and helping the doctors with patient care by entering information into the medical record (scribing), organizing information and materials for the doctor and clinic, coordinating care, and helping patients understand their disease and care.

You will learn the check-in and check-out or front desk processes and possibly learn how to cover other areas of the practice depending on your career goals and level of interest. Employees with areas of interest related to the medical business are encouraged to apply those skills for the benefit of the practice and its patients after they are established.

You will have the opportunity to participate in clinical trials developing new treatments for blinding eye diseases.

You will attend weekly educational meetings run by the doctors and senior staff.

Although this is an entry level position, rapid advancement is expected. Oregon Retina provides on the job training to help you advance and earn higher compensation. You will meet regularly and receive one-on-one instruction from the doctors and experienced staff in the practice. You will also benefit from a close relationship with other students in your situation. As your skills grow the physicians will create opportunities for observing surgeries and learning healthcare and/or administrative skills that may be valuable to your future career.
