Laboratory Service Technician

City JacksonvilleState FloridaTelecommute NoDepartment Laboratory Medicine & PathologyPosition descriptionThe Laboratory Support Service Tech (LSST) fucntions as an interdisciplinary team member that performs a wide range of services in clinic and hospital based laboratories such as specimen collection, specimen processing, reception desk duties, scheduling/billing functions, waived point of care laboratory testing, assisting with difficult INT sticks, and a variety of other services unique to the individual work area. The LSST is responsible for specimen receipt, identification verification, processing, shipping and storage. Process large volumes of specimens for multiple laboratory testing sites and accurately prepares lab specimens and containers with reagents as required for the ordered testing. Must be able to prioritize the workload in response to the specific needs of numerous requests. Works with various computer information systems on a daily basis. Must use critical thinking skills and participate in quality control programs within the laboratory.Ensures that all services are carried out according to established directions and guidelines in the Procedure Manual designated by Mayo Clinic Laboratory Department.Interacts with the patient, family, physicians, allied health staff, and visitors as a professional member of the laboratory team.Qualifications High school diploma or GED required.Additional qualificationsCertification in phlebotomy and one year experience in a clinical laboratory environment with experience at venous access and specimen processing preferred or certification as a Medical Assistant. Must be adaptable and well organized. Able to work independently as well as with a team. Must have good interpersonal skills when working with physicians, co-workers, and patients. Must be able to accurately read specimen labels and follow standard operating procedures. In addition, must be capable of doing general troubleshooting and problem solving regarding laboratory procedures. Works flexible hours to meet workload demands and accommodates schedule changes. Must have meticulous attention to detail.Physical ability required for lifting and long periods of standing. Good hearing and verbal communication skills needed. Must be able to distinguish colors. Must exercise caution to avoid potential exposure to hazards.License or certification None required.Exemption status Non-exemptCompensation DetailEducation, experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended.
