Associate Attorney

CHA Law Group, PC

Austin, Texas

Founded in 2006, CHA Law Group is a family law practice that focuses on adoption, assisted reproduction, and LGBTQ+ legal issues. The practice also handles a lot of traditional family law—divorce and child custody disputes—and a little bit of will and estate planning.

We are seeking a full-time Associate to join our team, handling primarily divorce, child custody (SAPCR), with some Child Protective Services (CPS) cases at least for your first year. The ideal candidate must have the ability to work independently and to build relationships with clients.

We are open to hiring either a Junior or Senior Associate.

Why might you want to work for us?

We train in family law!

—If you don’t know family law, we’ll train you in family law.

We train you in litigation!

—If you are a baby litigator when you start with us, you’ll have a lot of courtroom time under your belt after a year or two with us. Not just as second chair, you’ll be arguing your own motions/cases within a couple of weeks or months.

Steady income plus bonuses

—You get a semi-monthly paycheck

—Monthly bonuses based on receivables

Remote work options

—After training, negotiable remote work days (how many per week/month depending on level of experience and length of employment)

Flexible work days

—We are extremely work-life balance friendly (in procedure and temperament)

—After training, so long as you put your office hours/work-from-home/time off in the calendar, structure your weeks how you want

—Not the sort of office environment where you get side-eye because you’re picking up your kid or taking a Friday off

Flexible vacation

—You need to schedule around your own hearings and meet deadlines, but other than that, SUPER flexible about attorney and staff time off

Fun & informal office culture

—Explaining this makes us sound stodgy

Interesting and cutting-edge legal issues

—I mean it’s family law, that alone should explain “interesting”

—CHA’s reproductive law and LGBTQ+ specialties mean we get more calls about these cutting-edge legal issues than other family law shops

More amicable family law cases

—Our marketing and reputation yield more clients looking for collaborative law and amicable options than some other family attorneys in town who specialize in high-conflict (although we certainly have some high-conflict)

Good reputation

—CHA is a recipient of the Travis County Women’s Lawyer’s Association Pathfinder’s Award, an Austin Under 40 nominee for best attorney, Austin Monthly best attorney in adoption and family law categories

—Senior Associate is a member of the Austin LGBT Bar’s Board and the AYLA Board

—We know most of the local judges; most of them don’t dislike us (most days)

Super support staff

—Our paralegals, admins and office manager help you focus on legal work

Benefits

—Origination credit even for the most junior associates

—Monthly bonuses possible even for the most junior associates

—Medical insurance within 2–3 months

—Retirement with 3% match after waiting period

—Short-Term Disability

—CHA Law pays for all local CLEs and approved annual travel CLE

—CHA Law pays for bar dues, etc.

Required Qualifications

J.D. and Texas law license in good standing (although open to licensed attorney awaiting Texas approval from the State Bar or inactive attorney who needs to reactivate)

Experience practicing law

LGBTQ+ friendly
