Apply For This JobJoin us and make YOUR mark on the World!Come join Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) where we apply science and technology to make the world a safer place; now one of 2020 Best Places to Work by Glassdoor! We have an opening in the Nuclear and Particle Physics Group for a Postdoctoral Researcher to study indirect methods of determining cross sections important to short-lived fission product burnup in high neutron flux environments. The main focus will be on the design, execution, and analysis of an approved experiment at CARIBU to measure the gamma-ray strength functions and nuclear level densities of 94,95,96Sr via the beta-Oslo method using MSU’s SuN detector. The results from this experiment will then be used as inputs to Hauser-Feshbach codes to constrain (n,g) cross sections and determine the effect on measurements of cumulative fission fragment yields in that mass region. You will explore the synergy between Oslo methods (both traditional and beta-) and modern surrogate techniques. You will also have the opportunity to support direct measurements of inelastic neutron cross sections using the Gamma-Energy Neutron-Energy Spectrometer for Inelastic Studies (GENESIS) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s 88-inch cyclotron. This position is in Chemical and Isotopic Signatures group of the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division.Essential Duties

Plan and field approved experiments at facilities mentioned above

Develop data-analysis tools and techniques to interpret the results of the experiments

Perform simulations of the experimental setup to evaluate the detector response and background

Work with nuclear theorists to interpret analyzed experimental results and compare against surrogate techniques

Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars, and/or technical meetings

Collaborate with scientists and engineers at LLNL, MSU, ANL, and other laboratories

Provide technical contributions to the development of future nuclear physics experiments

Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Recent PhD in a nuclear physics, nuclear engineering, nuclear astrophysics or related field

Knowledge in nuclear structure, beta decay, and nuclear reaction physics as well as their experimental techniques and detector systems

Experience working with rare isotope beams, indirect reaction techniques, strength function and level density measurement techniques, or similar experiments and analysis

Programming experience in C, python, and/or other programming languages

Experience performing analysis using ROOT or comparable analysis framework

Experience performing simulations with GEANT4 or MCNP, Hauser-Feshbach reaction codes such as TALYS, EMPIRE or YAHFC, and gamma-ray cascade models such as RANIER or DICEBOX

Documented publication record in peer-reviewed literature in nuclear engineering, physics or a related field.

Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with a diverse set of scientists, engineers, and other technical and administrative staff.
