Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.Position SummaryThe Food Service Manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operation of the Food Service Department, which produces meals to over 450 Bell Shelter facility residents each day. The Food Service Manager supervises and participates in the production and presentation of all food for the facility. Ensures a consistent quality product is produced that conforms to all established standards. Provides a safe, sanitary work environment that adheres to all standards and regulations and supports the sustainable use of quality products. Interviews, schedules, trains, develops, empowers, coaches and counsels, resolves problems, provides open communication, and recommends discipline for staff as appropriate. Supervises/supports special projects and other responsibilities as assigned.Essential FunctionsDUTIES & RESPONSIBLITIES: (not listed in order of priority) Provide leadership to and supervision of the Food Service Department to ensure the smooth operation of the departments. Plan or participate in planning of weekly menus and utilization of food donations/surpluses and leftovers, considering probably number of dinners, market conditions, popularity of various dishes and menu cycle. Responsible for adhering to fiscal and budgetary food operational plans. Review menus analyze recipes and determine food items needed for menu production. Responsible for running Food Share Program in conjunction with Starbucks and LA Food Bank. Maintenance and upkeep of vehicle provided by the program. Responsible for submitting monthly reports on stats, inventory control, volunteer hours, soup kitchen reports. Estimate consumption and timely purchase of food projects. Conduct weekly inventory of food and kitchen supplies and requisition food and kitchen supplies as needed. Manage orders and deliveries to monitor accuracy of delivers and returns Prepare weekly & monthly inventory and statistics working closely with the Business Manager. Provide support to the Administrative team relative to budget preparation, short- and long-term planning, systems integration, and continuous quality improvement. Observe and supervise methods of food preparation and cooking, sizes of portions, and garnishing of foods to ensure food is prepared in a healthful, safe, and nutritious manner. Supervise production personnel and coordinate work assignments to ensure cost effective and timely food preparation. Test cooked foods as needed to meet established quality and taste standards. Train newly hired cooks and volunteer kitchen workers on kitchen practices. Train, support and manage the assistant kitchen manager and 15 plus employees. Coordinate staff schedules to ensure enough coverage always, including evenings, weekends, and special events. Design and conduct, as necessary, In-Service training sessions for department staff. Convene monthly team meetings to ensure department staff is up to date with department changes or to address department issues or concerns. Responsible for teaching and managing monthly ServeSafe food handlers’ classes to Bell Shelter staff and volunteer workers to ensure compliance with funder and Health Department requirements. Monitor and report all emergencies and accidents to the Director of Operations Review and follow up/investigate all incident reports involving kitchen department. Develop and/or update all forms and processes necessary for the smooth daily operation of the Food Service Dept. Responsible for establishing departmental policies and procedures and department training/orientation manual. Ensure compliance with all Food Service, Health and Safety Code, OSHA, local, State and Federal regulations and guidelines. Ensure compliance with Public Health standards of operation, funder contracts, and established facility policies. Establish and maintain a monthly training schedule on work safety to ensure all kitchen staff is trained under OSHA guidelines. Encourage and supervise all volunteers and community service volunteers. Maintain records and logs related to kitchen services. Perform pre-safety checks and routine inspections of food equipment and report equipment breakdown or services needed to Maintenance Department and Director of Operations. Schedule outside vendors for equipment repairs when needed and maintain maintenance contracts. Manage and train employees on the proper use of all kitchen equipment to include cleanliness of ovens, oven hoods, filters, etc. Ensure the cleanliness of dining hall, stainless steel and other areas under kitchen supervision. Responsible for the cleanliness and organization of the pantry and spaces used for storage of food and kitchen supplies. Recognize and adapt the appropriate menus and recipes for the specific needs of the client/resident population and demonstrate knowledge of specific issues directly related to age and health status of client/resident population. Work with the Residential Program staff (Main Shelter Programs and Substance Abuse Treatment Program) relative to clients with special meal requirements. Provide training/discipline recommendations and maintain a proactive human resource function to ensure employee motivation, training, and development. Attend and participate in continuing educational programs as required by funder contracts and department requirements. Establish and maintain effective and positive work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties. Perform all duties with courtesy and respect, maintaining a healthy relationship with the staff and clients. Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings/weekends/holidays and fill in for other positions temporarily, as necessary to ensure proper staff coverage at all times. Is subject to callback during emergency conditions (e.g., severe weather, power outage, evacuation, Post-disaster, etc.). Additional duties as directed by Director, Associate Director and Director of Operations.RequirementsWorking ConditionsAbility to walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis. Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead. Ability to operate computer, fax and telephone. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor of Arts in Social Work preferred or Associates Degree or related field preferred. Minimum of one-year experience working with low-income and/or homeless individuals and families.

Must possess a Valid Class C California Driver’s License.

Minimum of one-year experience working with low-income and/or homeless individuals and families.

Must be able to pass a criminal background check.

If working in vicinity of children a criminal background check is required with certification for Protect the Mission policies and procedures.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

Ability to place orders and calculate inventories for production.

Service minded and able to function in a multi-facility environment.

Excellent communication skills for daily interaction internal/external customers and supporting staff in the various departments.

Ability to organize time, priorities and schedules and adhere to the monthly calendar deadlines.

Strong work ethic, high output in service delivery, able to complete tasks well and efficiently.

Must have work experience in kitchen/food service (knife skills, health, sanitary regulations, cooking skills and working with large equipment).

Ability to carry out assignments independently, maintain good rapport and communication with other staff members, clients and the public.

Experience working with the homeless, preferred.

Must be able to work any shift and assigned schedule.
