Job Description: Apex Systems currently has an immediate opening for a Senior SolarWinds Engineer in the greater Baltimore area with one of our Financial clients. Working as part of the Information & Technology Services (ITS) Back Office Technology team, the SolarWinds & Splunk Engineering position is responsible for managing the definition, development, and instrumentation for observability and monitoring practices to ensure has maximum insight into system behaviors and operational events. This can include work on SolarWinds, Splunk, and additional platforms as needed. The role will depend heavily on partnership with peer teams to ensure that all observability and monitoring needs are met. The role will work closely with the AVP of Back Office Technology and IT Architecture to develop a holistic observability and monitoring practicesWe are seeking a technically versed, hands-on engineer with a strong customer focus - demonstrating the spirit that technology is useful only to the degree that it properly serves the humans that use it.If you, or someone you know may be interested, please forward an updated resume to John James at SUMMARY OF POSITION: The Observability Engineer position:
  • Instruments and maintains enterprise-wide logging, monitoring, and alerting via modern tools (i.e. SolarWinds, Splunk, etc.)
  • Works with other IT SMEs to develop application or use-case specific monitoring and alerting
  • Serves as primary SME for implementation of additional monitoring, alerting, and observability practices
  • Serves as primary support of SolarWinds including maintenance, upgrades, capacity planning, and future component considerations
  • The observability and monitoring practice, at a minimum, will include networking, hardware, applications, and certificates
  • Works with the AVP of Back Office Technologies and IT Architects to evaluate and continuously update the observability and monitoring program
  • Thoroughly document processes involved in setting up monitors, alerts, and other observability or monitoring devices
  • Provides documentation to ITS support personnel to provide actionable responses to alerts and observability outputs
  • Establish governance over monitoring for our technology footprint
This position reports to the AVP, Back Office TechnologiesRequired Skills & Experience:
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with an energetic focus on the human side of the technology realm
  • Hands-on experience with setup, administration, and day-to-day support of SolarWinds functionality
  • Minimum 5 years effective experience related to observability and monitoring
  • Minimum 3 years of experience with SolarWinds monitoring and alerting administration
  • Demonstrated experience in maintaining operational health for logging, monitoring, and alerting services
  • Experience in delivering and maintaining solutions that heavily leverage virtualized environments - VMware, VDI, SD-WAN
  • Strongly disciplined in Information Security industry standards & practices
  • Ability to present ideas/concepts and interact effectively with technical and non-technical users at all organizational levels
  • Ability to document processes and workflows, develop reports, business correspondence, and procedures for a diverse audience using common tools such as Visio, and other MS Office products
  • Minimum 3 years of experience with common technology platforms: Windows, Linux, MacOS/iOS, database platforms, networking components (firewalls, routers, switches), data center environmentals, access control systems, and telephony equipment
  • Bachelors or Master's degree in Information Systems or related field with 5 years relevant work experience. Without a degree, at least 10 years directly applicable relevant leadership and work experience plus relevant technical certifications
Desired Skills & Experience:
  • Demonstrated experience building and maturing governance practice for the monitoring, logging, alerting, and performance of critical systems
  • Experience/familiarity with the Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles and practices
  • Ability to work in a self-directed manner
  • Experience/familiarity with instrumenting observability for cloud-based solutions
  • Well-versed in project management fundamentals - Waterfall & Agile
  • Splunk data ingestion and reporting basics (fundamental SPL skills)
  • Experience with technology work in a mid-size organization
  • Experience partnering with vendors, systems integrators, and other 3rd parties to deliver services
  • Experience with Ivanti Service Manager (ISM) for service requests and incidents
  • Credit union or financial services experience
  • Experience with Fiserv Nautilus, or DNA software products
  • Understanding of certificate lifecycle management
  • Relevant technical certifications, i.e. Splunk, SolarWinds, SRE
Other Qualifications:
  • Ability to pass background and satisfactory credit check
  • Ability to work outside of regular business hours, including holidays and weekends, as business & project needs require
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and to operate other computer components
  • Occasional lifting from floor, as well as table height, and transporting of moderately heavy (up to 50 lbs) objects, such as computers and peripherals
  • Ability to travel independently and directly to all facilities and designated sponsor locations as needed
