Transition House, a nonprofit homeless shelter and permanent housing provider for families with children in Santa Barbara, seeks an enthusiastic volunteer coordinator to interface with existing volunteers and recruit new volunteers, supporting all in their efforts to assist service delivery throughout the agency. Volunteer groups partner with staff to provide dinner and lunch service in the shelter, assistance with our daytime and evening childcare functions, and offer support for our administrative activities. Some volunteers have been with the organization since it was founded in 1984.

Core job responsibilities of the volunteer coordinator:

Respond to all inquiries about volunteering from individuals or groups. Meet with potential new volunteers and provide them with a tour of the agency, and schedule them for service. Work with departments on orientation and training for new volunteers.

Update and maintain daily agency volunteer calendar. Seek substitutes or recruit new volunteers to fill positions that are vacated. Assist department leads in managing volunteers.

Coordinate with community individuals and businesses wishing to make in-kind donations and/or conduct group donation drives.

Visit shelter in the evening from 4:30pm-6:00pm M-Th; check in with dinner provider group.

Update donor database with volunteer contact information, volunteer status, and notes. Maintain current contact records.

Carefully collect data for grant reporting purposes.

Create a volunteer e-newsletter to be sent quarterly.

Working with departmental staff, organize holiday events, especially Thanksgiving Dinner and Christmas day festivities including large scale gift drive, that utilize extensive support and involvement from the community.

Organize an annual Volunteer Appreciation Picnic with the support of agencywide staff.

Conduct various efforts to express gratitude to volunteers throughout the year.

Maintain a friendly, open-door policy for volunteer feedback, needs and concerns.

Lend support to inhouse fundraising staff on donor events and cultivation efforts.

Transition House is a grassroots organization that values diversity and volunteers are critical to our operations. The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic supporter of Transition House’s mission, possess excellent “people skills” and enjoy interacting with and empowering community members who volunteer. The volunteer coordinator must have excellent spoken and written communication skills and be detail oriented. The volunteer coordinator should have experience working with either a database or a program such as Excel. Ideal candidates should have experience working in a similar capacity or in a position that has utilized similar skill sets. Bilingual capabilities a plus—Team Player a must.

Position is 30 hours per week, 11:00am to 6:00pm M-T, 9:00am-1:00pm on Fridays. Salary DOE. Includes medical and dental benefits, vacation pay and a retirement plan. Transition House is an equal opportunity employer. Send cover letter and resume. No phone calls.
