The successful candidate will become a member of GA onsite team participating in the development, fabrication, characterization and analysis of novel experimental physics packages required for high energy density plasma physics experiments conducted at the world’s largest laser, NIF.The ideal candidate will work under general supervision and with on-going review will assist in determining and developing effective approaches for resolving a wide range of manufacturing and related processes including coating, assembly, characterization, and related techniques to produce complex millimeter scale assemblies (aka targets). Under close supervision with specific detailed instructions on routine tasks, this position assists the technical staff in the analysis, investigation and solution of routine engineering problems of limited scope. Assignments are small projects or to phase(s) of larger projects(s), normally outlined in terms of task-related activities with detailed instruction and reviewed regularly for adequacy in meeting objectives. May coordinate segments of a specific project and may have frequent inter-team contacts pertaining to technical issues of limited scope.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

This is a hands-on, lab based position for engineer/scientist to use their knowledge to advance custom solutions in support of target fabrication activities. Job requires these activities on the daily basis: (1) Use theoretical knowledge to conceptualize, design and build new equipment to perform one-of-kind measurement or operations, often containing elements of motion/vision automation. (2) Assist in maintaining, upgrading, repairing or modifying a suite of unique custom-built instruments. (3) Use understanding of the strengths and limitations of instrumentations and automation options.

Work with a high degree of independence in task and project management while incorporating inputs and constraints from multidisciplinary target fab team members. Weekly progress reporting to the operations team and LLNL program leadership.

Translates specifications and requirements into practical approaches with best product quality while working to improve production rates, efficiencies, and yields in a low volume, high mix environment.

Supports new product/process introduction as well as process improvement methodologies while considering continuous improvements.

Maintain safe, clean and organized assembly and characterization laboratories and equipment.

Assist on R&D projects under the direction of LLNL program leadership, and work with and provide support to the wider target fab team, collaborators and scientists.

Perform failure analysis investigations, implement and carry out mitigation real time strategies.

Documents findings, communicates results to scientific staff and makes technical presentations as required. Publish in recognized scientific journals, present work at conferences.

Responsible for observing all laws, regulations and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted. Expected to work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.

Typically requires a bachelors degree in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.

Must have a basic understanding of engineering concepts, principles, and theory.

Demonstrates the ability to follow and apply basic engineering knowledge, adapt standard techniques, and utilize the required diagnostics, tools and equipment, while ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.

Must be able to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment.

Good communication, computer, and interpersonal skills are required to enable an effective interface with other professionals, to produce appropriate documentation, and to present results to a limited internal audience.

Must be able to work both independently and on a team.

Able to work extended hours as required.

Desirable Qualifications:

Experience in LabVIEW programming in the context of equipment instrumentation, data acquisition, automation, and data analysis is strongly desired. Knowledge of LabVIEW architectures such as State Machine and Object Oriented Programming is desired. Fluent in Microsoft Office suite, with particular experience in Excel macros and Pivot table function. Experience with other programming languages like MATLAB and Python is desired.

Emphasis on understanding engineering first principles in the context of assembly, metrology, equipment design, measurement automation, and data analysis.

Must have ability to understand production and work with production system to manage BOMS, non-conformance reports, SPC data, data packages, and recommend corrective actions. Knowledge of or experience with Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing and/or 5S principles is desired.

Versed in inspection techniques such as optical microscopy, radiography, SEM/EDAX, white light interferometry, etc is desired.
