Position Title: Mississippi Intern

Reports To: Mississippi Site Director

Status: Part-Time upto 10 hrs per week

FLSA Designation: Non-Exempt

Location: Flexible, open to MS residents only.

Position Summary

The Mississippi Intern will take on a range of responsibilities that are critical to the success of the First Place for youth mission. The intern will participate in meetings with key partners, help organize and execute events, conduct research, enter program data into spreadsheets and data systems, and create social media content. The intern will have the opportunity to develop a wide range of professional skills including: research, writing, meeting planning and execution, public speaking, navigating professional environments and will regularly meet with the supervisor to build a unique professional development plan based on their personal goals. The position is scheduled to work for 10 hours per week, primarily during normal business hours (9-5, Monday - Friday).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Participating in events and meetings regarding child welfare system change efforts

o These will all be virtual meetings and events at this time, but may transition into in-person meetings and events in the future when in-person activities are considered safe.

Conducting research to support child welfare policy and practice change

Scheduling, planning, and organizing meetings and events

Entering data into program data systems

Developing and posting content on official social media channels

Other duties as assigned

Position Competencies

Interest in child welfare, public policy, and / or authentic youth engagement

Lived experience in the foster care system in Mississippi as a teenager

Proficiency in Microsoft office applications including Word

Familiarity and experience developing social media content is a plus

Consistent access to a working cell phone, internet, and a computer with video capability

Strong interpersonal skills (working with others, actively participating in meetings, etc.)

Available to work 10 hours per week during regular business hours (9-5 Monday-Friday). Some work may occur outside of regular business hours if approved by supervisor. Schedule will be created in partnership with supervisor on a bi-weekly basis.

First Place for Youth is a non-profit organization that operates in multiple states across the country, including Mississippi. Our mission is to help foster youth build the skills they need to make a successful transition to self-sufficiency and responsible adulthood. In Mississippi, we coordinate Mississippi Youth Voice, a group of young leaders with foster care experience working together to improve the child welfare system in our state. We also operate the Opportunity Passport matched savings program for foster youth in the state and build partnerships throughout Mississippi to support improvements to the foster care system.
