Diadromous Fish Analyst (Woods Hole)
Massachusetts, Cape cod / islands 00000 Cape cod / islands USA

Vacancy expired!

Integrated Statistics is looking for a Diadromous Fisheries Analyst to support the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC).

The Diadromous Fisheries Analyst will examine the structure and function of diadromous fish in Northeast Shelf watersheds, estuaries, and marine ecosystems, synthesizing what is known about the ecosystem processes that drive diadromous species abundance and productivity in freshwater environments. The Analyst will explore the connections that diadromous fish have with the marine environment, to identify which ecosystem processes are impaired, and to suggest scientific actions and implications for integrated management. An expected outcome is a conceptual model that fosters a better understanding of ecosystem connections while identifying and addressing the practical needs of managers to support Ecosystem Based Management. This work will involve collaboration with NMFS researchers, managers, and habitat specialists, and a strong desire to work with resource managers at tribal, state, and federal levels is needed. Research results are to be published in the peer-reviewed literature. The Analyst will develop and submit a manuscript for publication in a peer-reviewed journal that (1) synthesizes the literature on ecosystem processes that connect freshwater and marine ecosystems of the Northeast United States and (2) identifies science and management needs that will benefit the management and recovery of diadromous fish and other NOAA trust resources. The Analyst will identify a network of scientists, managers, other parties at government and non-government organizations, and academic and research institutions. Information gained from this network will offer partners interested in diadromous species and watershed management resources to better understand the connections between freshwater, estuarine, and marine ecosystems of the Northeast United States and to identify the needs of managers to support Ecosystem Based Management for NOAA trust resources.

Duties

The Diadromous Fisheries Analyst will work closely with an oversight group consisting of NOAA Fisheries Service staff representing the NEFSC, Restoration Center, and GARFO Protected Resources Division at a minimum. The oversight group will help guide the work to ensure it adequately addresses science and management needs. The Analyst will also work closely with other collaborators. The tasks include:

Developing peer reviewed manuscript(s) which accomplishes the following:

Drawing from existing literature, synthesizing documented and hypothesized connections between freshwater, estuarine, and marine ecosystems in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean.

Providing examples and a conceptual model of how these connections historically functioned and current impairment in Northeast U.S. Continental Shelf ecosystem.

Developing a synthesis of how an improved understanding of these connections will provide benefits such as:

Increased freshwater, estuarine, marine and terrestrial productivity, increased recreational and commercial fishing opportunities; increased recreational activity opportunities, etc.

Increased understanding of ecosystem connections across environs will support ecosystem based management of NOAA trust resources.

Coordinating oversight group meetings to provide progress reports and receive feedback and guidance as necessary

Providing verbal interim reports at oversight group meetings that summarize progress to date and expected outcomes and timelines

Providing a completion report for study phases for dissemination to a wider audience, that provides an overview of work completed and includes a submission-ready manuscript for consideration for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

Deliverables including: biweekly accomplishment summaries and a monthly composite report; minutes from each oversight group meeting; three Interim reports, including an overview of citations compiled to date within an electronic library in conjunction with oversight group meetings (verbal); study phase reports in conjunction with an oversight group meeting, schedule developed with oversight group (written); submission of manuscript(s) to a peer-reviewed journal which synthesizes the ecosystem processes that connect freshwater and marine ecosystems in the area of interest and identifies science and management needs that will benefit the management and recovery of sea-run fish species and other NOAA trust resources native to these watersheds and marine ecosystems.

Reference list and electronic library of relevant documents consulted during the course of this project.

Inventory of key individuals working within freshwater and marine ecosystems within the area of interest that would be critical to involve in any future science/management actions aimed at benefiting the management and recovery of sea-run fish species and other NOAA Trust Resources.

Presentation(s) at local, domestic, or international scientific and/or public meeting(s) as approved by the oversight group.

Qualifications and Skills

Master's with three years of post degree experience, or Ph.D. in biological sciences, natural resource management, fisheries, quantitative ecology, or a related field and demonstrated practical experience.

Mastery of computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access, and email.

Demonstrated proficiency with statistical software and graphics packages to summarize data.

Demonstrated technical and scientific writing experience with published research results.

Possession of a valid driver’s license and ability to travel within the US and possibly Canada. Ability to work legally in the United States.

Ability to work effectively, both independently and within a team.

Demonstrated strong time management skills and attention to detail.

Excellent communication skills, including speaking, public speaking, writing, presentation. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with technical, scientific, and general public audiences.

Ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities and strict timelines.

The position will begin with an extended period of remote work to accommodate pandemic restrictions. No earlier than July 2021, the position would be based out of Woods Hole MA, Gloucester MA, or Orono ME. During the remote work, the Analyst will need high speed internet for electronic access to resources and communication with colleagues.
