Job Description

HR Acuity is looking for a passionate and highly motivated Microsoft SQL Server DBA, to act as a hands-on Subject Matter Expert for SQL Server, data projects and SQL Server in Azure. The ideal candidate will have a background in Database Administration, Data Architecture, Data Movement, Data Stores, Data Modeling, Data Management and experience in Azure.

The ideal candidate will provide leadership for the design, development, and implementation of data-heavy projects and provide solutions specific to their area of expertise. The DBA will have hands on responsibilities. The DBA will ensure all architectures are compliant with enterprise database architecture standards, provide leadership and guidance to the development teams and participate in the resolution of major project issues.

Responsibilities

  • Act as Database Administration to support Production and Non-Production database servers, data related and data movement projects in Azure
  • Participate in data transformation, database architecture and design for Shaw transactional applications, Data Warehouse, Operational Data Stores and Data Movement projects
  • Act as the SME around SQL Server in Microsoft Azure
  • Support existing teams in a technical, hands-on capacity, to deliver successful data projects
  • Ability to troubleshoot and utilize analytical and problem-solving skills to seek solutions and commercial resolutions
  • Monitoring performance and systems health according to requirements, troubleshoot any issues and outages, review logs and verify completion of scheduled jobs
  • Tunes performance of the environment including databases, tables, views/queries, and stored procedures
  • Ensure security and access control through best practices and tools, monitor to identify and block any possible intrusions, work with the development team to improve application and hosting environment security
  • Identify and present the technical trade-offs and risks of different technical approaches in a meaningful way
  • Maintain database solutions in a Hybrid (Cloud Heavy) environment.
  • Proactive monitoring of DB health- Backups, Replication, AG’s, Clusters, Agent Jobs, etc.
  • Capacity plan, performance monitor, and tune databases.
  • Validate backups are within their RTO’s and RPO’s by timely restoration.
  • Provides database support by coding utilities, responding to developers’ questions, and resolving problems.
  • Support data engineers’ work in developing and optimizing ETL solutions.
  • Keep up to date with new & emerging technologies.
  • Provide for high-quality documentation.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • 7 or more years of experience as a SQL Database Administrator
  • Database Administration for SQL Server 2012 and above (Installation, Maintenance, Security Administration, Upgrades, Configuring, Performance Tuning, Monitoring, Replication, Failover Clustering, Database Maintenance, SQL Server Agent Jobs, etc.)
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience with SSIS, ETL, SSRS, and PowerBI
  • 2 or more years of experience working in Azure
  • Working knowledge of SQL managed instances and SQL virtual machines
  • A minimum of 5-7 years of experience in Data Modeling and Design
  • Working knowledge of logical and physical database modeling
  • Create database objects (tables, indexes, etc.), stored procedures, functions and triggers in SQL Server
  • Experience with using Trace flags/Profiler to solve Dead Locks/Long-running queries
  • Extensive experience in designing and handling disaster recovery/high availability procedures
  • Contribute to Performance and Load Testing projects
  • Plan growth and changes (capacity planning)
  • Perform general technical trouble shooting and give consultation to development teams
  • Use native tools like Profiler, Perfmon, system stored procedures, dynamic management views, custom stored procedures or third-party tools
  • Backing up and restoring SQL Server, knowledge of all MS DB backup and recovery scenarios
  • Establish and maintain sound backup and recovery policies and procedures
  • Monitor application related jobs and data replication activities
  • Ensure data consistency in the database through DBCC commands
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in Data Warehouses, Operational Data Stores, Data Migration and Data Movement such as SSIS

Experience

  • Azure SQL: 5 years (Preferred)
  • SQL Server: 5 years (Required)
  • Experience with Azure Data Factory
  • Agile software development experience
  • Experience with Master Data Management programs especially focusing on Data Quality

Education

  • Four-Year College Degree (BA or BS) or Advanced Degree. A degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field is highly desirable.
  • Azure or AWS Cloud Certifications preferred
  • One or more Certifications preferred:
  • Microsoft Certified Database Administrator (MCDBA)
  • Microsoft Certified Solutions Developer (MCSD)
