SAFETY SPECIALIST

Job Description

Position summary:

This position is responsible for further developing and implementing a strong safety program for our manufacturing facilities, providing support to the plant management teams, driving continuous improvement in the safety culture, and is part of the responsibility for the implementation of safety policies and procedures at our facilities. The Safety Specialist role also closely assists with tasks related to monitoring safety and health regulations and provides guidance and support to management to ensure compliance with federal and state safety and health requirements. This position reports directly Corporate with a dotted line to the plant. There are no supervisory duties assigned to this role.

Education and experience:

High School diploma or equivalent

Technical or Associates Degree or two years of college level coursework preferred

Two years of related experience

Manufacturing experience

Safety experience

Ergonomics experience preferred

Experience in PC with proficiency in Microsoft Office products such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook are required

A safety certification will be required within four years of successful employment

Physical requirements:

Visually inspect machinery

Prolonged standing and walking on concrete surfaces

Bend, stretch, push, pull, and move as needed to reach, clean and service machinery

Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer

Work environment is exposed to elements that can include but are not limited to coolant, dust, mist, elevated noise, and uncontrolled temperatures

May be required to climb stairs and ladders or crawl into crawl spaces, balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch as needed.

Must be able to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.

Ability to work with industrial hygiene instruments, including calibration, use in the field, and downloading data, etc.

Ability to provide and understand analysis, identification of risk trends, problems, and areas of development

Ability to drive and apply meaningful operations and safety performance metrics

Ability to work well independently and with others

Ability to dependable and maintain adequate attendance and be on time

Ability to work a shift schedule (i.e. four 10 hour or three 12 hour) in a manufacturing environment

Ability to have a grateful attitude

Duties and responsibilities:

Providing input and recommendations to facility leadership, line management, Team members, and visitors/contractors regarding all manner of environmental health and safety aspects of risk

Assist with the creation and implementation programs in conformance considering Federal and State standards and in line with facility location strategic direction (Lockout-Tag Out, Working at Heights, Contractor Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Hazcom, and MSDS management, etc.)

Provides recommendations to Operations during new equipment launch and changes i.e. assists in facilitating and approving machine guard risk assessments, ergonomic assessments, industrial hygiene reviews, etc.

Assists with ensuring changes following approved processes

Entering data into report, and reporting and tracking training and programs for plant leadership, management, Team Members, and contractors

Assists with conducting safety investigations, classification of incidents, and 300 reporting logs

Internal audits to ensure compliance with safety policies and procedures

Coordinates the facility Health and Safety Committee with accountability to ensure meetings and inspections are appropriately document as required

Assists in ensuring compliance and continuous improvement activities associated with the facility’s materials, etc.

Auditing, supporting paper and documentation and confirming compliance in identified areas

Assisting in the support of and interactions with OSHA, etc.

Performs other related duties as assigned
