Summary:The Staff Physical Therapist reports to the Clinical Supervisor, Physical Therapy. The Staff Physical Therapist provides quality direct patient care in assigned areas in accordance with the standards of the Maine Practice Act for Physical Therapy and in accordance with the philosophy of Maine Coast Memorial Hospital. The staff therapist coordinates, delegates and supervises responsibilities assigned to supportive staff (PTA, Rehab Techs).Responsibilities: Provides direction and supervision to the Physical Therapist Assistants and Rehab Techs. Demonstrates the ability to observe and evaluate treatment effect, recommends/discusses program changes with coworkers and physician as needed. Demonstrates the ability to perform an appropriate examination and evaluation on all patients as related to the therapy ordered. Provides reassessments as per policy and standard of care. Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors. Formulates a teaching plan based upon identified learning needs and evaluate effectiveness of learning, family is included in teaching as appropriate. Documents outcome and patient/caregiver education in the medical record. Demonstrates knowledge and skills in the provision of physical therapy interventions. Completes department specific competencies. Participates in hospital wide in-services on new equipment & program initiatives. Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly. Maintains department cleanliness. Communicates appropriately and clearly to direct supervisor, rehab manager, patients and colleagues. Documents communication accordingly. Adjusts staffing according to patient volume. Coordinates and assists the PT clinical supervisor with direct patient care to ensure patients’ needs are met and hospital policy is followed. Documents appropriately following departmental guidelines in a timely, concise and accurate fashion. Demonstrates that treatment documentation includes the date, total treatment minutes in minutes, and total timed code treatment minutes. As measured via random audit there is documentation of: Home Exercise Program/Patient Education (80%) Pain (80%) Progress towards Goals & Barriers to Progress (100%) Communication (physicians and other disciplines) (80%) Functional Diagnosis & Time Frame (80%) Adjusts plan of care & treatment plan based on patient participation and tolerance to treatment. Ensures that services provided meet the requirements for medical necessity including that they are skilled, safe, and effective (i.e., progress indicates that the care is effective in rehabilitation of function). (This section applies to any activities billed to a third party payor) Promotes the physical therapy profession. Assists with orientation of new staff to the department and specialty programs. Provides in-service to staff, physician offices & community annually and after attendance at a conference or continuing education program. Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments. Complies with department based & organizational wide policies. Reviews policies annually & complies with updated patient safety standards, infection control policies & organizational safety standards. Promotes the physical therapy profession: Collaborate in patient care improvement initiatives and performance improvement activities within the organization Community based education forums Serves as a clinical instructor; supervises student physical therapists Markets specialty programs to the community, physician practices & colleagues annually. Updates brochures, marketing materials-electronic & written annually to ensure most up to date information available to public Updates time and attendance record daily with few exceptions (<30%) Productivity meets Labor Standard Complies with department based & organizational wide policies & procedures. Reviews policies annually & complies with updated national patient safety standards, infection control policies & organizational wide safety standards. Uses appropriate outcome tools: To demonstrate effectiveness of program-annually On initial evaluation At discharge Participates in professional development annually as a department & as an organization.
