It is recommended employees wishing to apply for job openings at Corning make their supervisor aware of their interest before formally applying.Supervising the Precision Engineering Systems group, developing direct reports, supporting the group’s core capabilities of Precision Engineering. The technology focus will be development of robust, first/next generation machine systems that provide significant competitive advantage to Corning’s businesses, and/or enable new products and product lines.The individual will be responsible to lead or support cross-functional teams and direct reports, on early innovation stage projects, through concept generation / certification, technology development, detail design / build, and start-up in manufacturing.Key Responsibilities Include but not limited to the following: Manage the growth and career development of direct reports through the effective use of project objectives, career review’s, and training. Set project priorities and tactical direction for the team based on impact to business results, constrained resources and timelines required to manage and support a broad range of engineering projects. Develop a high level of fundamental understanding of the process and materials to enable the development of cost effective products and machine systems. Develop strong networks across the Research, Development and Engineering teams that are involved in the innovation and manufacture of new products and machine systems for any of Corning’s Divisions. Support the department’s core capabilities. This effort will include working with internal SME’s to ensure technology strategies are in place, identify future needs, support the associated capital and technology spending budgets to advance the technologies, support the laboratory infrastructure and safety. This effort will also include maintaining an internal and external network for these different technologies, understand the “State of the Art” technology both in academia and in industry. Understanding Corporate priorities identify opportunities to support; prioritize and make recommendations on potential projects. Negotiate resource allocations with directorate managers, and other functional managers across the technology community and business division engineering organizations. Benchmark suppliers external to Corning and build a strong supplier base to support early stage innovation projects that require some level of precision. Work as a team member/advisor during the development of new machine systems with system integrators and/or external sub-contractors.Travel Requirements: Estimated travel at 10% - 30% depending upon specific project assignment.Travel may be required during installation, debug, and start-up as well as for routine interaction with internal and external Customers and Suppliers.Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: Normal Business Hours (8 – 5, M – F), however, work hours required to achieve project objectives most likely will exceed 40 hours per week.Required Skills: Experience in successful development and delivery of new products or fully integrated, first/next generation process machine systems through early stages of innovation and into manufacturing. Experience in leading and managing direct reports. Strong technical leadership skills that will enable unique solutions to the technical challenges. Experience with projects requiring development of fundamental process understanding and requirements. Demonstrated project leadership experience with ability to achieve results through a highly matrixed project team. Ability to effectively manage highly ambiguous situations and effectively demonstrate leadership in assigned early stage projects. Ability to interface with senior management and provide clear concise program strategies, resources needs, and program updates. Ability to effectively leverage external machine builders and system integrators for detail design, build, and integration of later stages of machine system implementation.Desired Skills: Innovative and creative. High commitment level. Entrepreneurial. Forward looking. Knowledge of Corning’s manufacturing processes, especially in glass and ceramics.
