Job Title: Immigration Attorney

Reports to: Managing Attorney for Immigration Legal Services

Job Status: Full-time, Exempt

Memorial Assistance Ministries (MAM) serves the Houston Community by providing immigration services for people who come from all social classes while treating them with dignity and respect. In fulfillment of MAMs mission and goals, the attorney helps individuals and families move up on the Stability Pathway by helping them gain permission to work and live in the United States allowing them to become self-sufficient.

This position may work remotely up to two days a week with supervisor approval provided it is in an environment which is professional for a virtual meeting. To qualify to work from home, and due to the sensitive and confidential work conducted by our Immigration team, the employee must have a private space available and the use of headphones or a headset.

Position Summary

MAM seeks an immigration attorney to provide high quality legal services to low-income individuals and families seeking work authorization, legal permanent residency, and citizenship. This will include providing legal screenings, consultations, advice, and direct representation on a variety of cases including crime victim cases, citizenship, DACA renewals, adjustment of status and family petition cases. The attorney also provides services in the form of community outreach, legal education, and workshops.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Provide legal screenings, consultations, advice, and counseling to potential clients regarding immigration matters

Direct representation includes preparing and filing applications before USCIS, the Department of State, and the Board of Immigration Appeals; monitoring pending cases for adjudication; responding to request for evidence, and attending USCIS interviews when needed

Conducts legal research and writing including correspondence, briefs, and motions

Coordinator and presenter for MAM outreaches in the community including participation in HILSC (coalition) activities.

Manage a significant caseload, deadlines, and other tasks simultaneously

Reviews current case law, memorandums, and regulatory changes, consults with clients and staff about such changes

Maintain client physical and electronic files according to program requirements, performs case management tasks, including calendar and file notes, invoicing, client database entries, correspondence, and case service statistics

Consistently follows all record keeping policies, procedures, and standards to ensure that all client information is protected from unauthorized or unintended release

Attend all staff meetings, program meetings and meetings with supervisor

Attend professional development activities such as immigration-related conferences, meetings, and trainings

Practice open and constructive communication with co-workers, supervisors, and clients, and contribute ideas or suggestions to help better the program

Collaborate with other agencies, stakeholders, and service providers to procure client services and network with like-minded organizations

Perform all duties as assigned by Managing Attorney

Qualifications:

Attorney must have a J.D. from an ABA certified law school and be licensed to practice in at least one state in the United States or are awaiting results.

Experience in immigration law is preferred; law school experience will be considered

Fluency in Spanish and English is required.

Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal.

Demonstrate the ability to work with people from all walks of life and treat them with dignity and respect, to listen empathetically and provide options for relief.

Flexibility to occasionally work in the evening to accommodate the scheduling needs of clients and/or to support or attend events on behalf of MAM

Provide own reliable transportation with proof of valid driver’s license and Texas minimum requirements of auto insurance.
