The Electrician I/II Traffic and Buildings is responsible to perform a wide variety of skilled duties involving the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical systems and equipment involved with electrical support, including streetlights, street signals, automated traffic management systems, lighted crosswalks, building lighting, and may include working with high voltage up to 5,000 volts; and to assist with the training of personnel in the City’s electrician training program.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Electrician I – Traffic and Buildings - This is the entry level class in the Electrician – Traffic and Buildings series. Positions in this class typically have little or no directly related work experience. The Electrician I – Traffic and Buildings class is distinguished from the II level by the performance of less than the full range of duties assigned to the II level. Incumbents work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks, progressing to general supervision as procedures and processes of assigned area of responsibility are learned.

Electrician II - Traffic and Buildings - This is the journey level class in the Electrician - Traffic and Buildings series and is distinguished from the I level by the assignment of the full range of duties. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new, unusual, or unique situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit. Positions in this class are typically flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level. Employees within this class are assigned to a crew and are distinguished from Electrician Assistant III by the assignment of the full range of duties and complexity of work, including the maintenance and repair of high voltage systems.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Electrician I – Traffic and Buildings

Experience:

One year of increasingly responsible experience equivalent to Electrician Assistant III with the City of Modesto.

Training:

High School diploma or GED equivalency.

License or Certificate:

Possession of a valid Class A or Class B Commercial California driver’s license with specific endorsements, as assigned, is required within sixty (60) days of appointment.

Failure to obtain any of the required licenses/certifications within the prescribed time will result in release from probation or termination.

Electrician II – Traffic and Buildings

Experience:

One year of increasingly responsible experience equivalent to Electrician I – Traffic and Buildings with the City of Modesto.

Training:

High School diploma or GED equivalency, supplemented by additional specialized training in electrical or electronic maintenance.

License or Certificate:

Possession of a valid Class A or Class B Commercial California driver’s license with specific endorsements, as assigned, is required within sixty (60) days of appointment.

When assigned, possession of a valid Crane Operator Certificate, issued by the National Commission of Crane Operators, is required within six (6) months of assignment.

Failure to obtain any of the required licenses/certifications within the prescribed time will result in release from probation or termination.
