Job Description

Key responsibilities for this role will be leading a team of engineers and designers to develop and launch new products for the consumer outdoor power equipment market. This hands-on position will require an individual with strong project management skills with an emphasis on new product development and commercialization of proven designs as well as oversight of strategic cost takeout initiatives. This position will work closely with resources inside and outside the organization to complete key projects / programs.

Principle Responsibilities

  • Manages the work activities of department personnel to achieve maximum quality and productivity of the department.
  • Plans and directs the design portion of an engineering project as well as directs the activities of documenting an engineering project.
  • Assigns work to engineering personnel after considering job requirements, job priorities, experience, training, and workload.
  • Develops or oversees development of product specifications to communicate to offshore manufacturers.
  • Develops or oversees development of Gantt charts for active projects.
  • Coordinate all designs with manufacturing procedures and ensure initial product verification with manufacturer.
  • Keeps management informed on product status by gathering and collecting data. Provides regular and special reports and metrics on a regular basis.
  • Reviews customer’s compliance requirement and oversees design to meet compliance requirements.
  • Develops product testing protocol and maintains test protocols.
  • Reviews lab and field test failures, corrects designs where appropriate and provides guidance / recommendations to the manufacturer for product improvement.
  • Develops or oversees development of owner’s manuals and on product labeling to meet compliance requirements.
  • Evaluates and mentors direct reports.
  • Ability and willingness to travel overseas. Travel is required 10-15% of the time, but could vary to support project / customer needs.

Qualifications

Competencies

Education/Experience:

  • BSME
  • 10+ years work experience in engineering role with 5+ years in engineering management role.
  • Experience with gasoline powered products, preferably with outdoor power equipment.
  • Project management and organization skills utilizing Microsoft Office products.
  • Experience in new product development process (Stage Gate or Milestones).
  • Experience dealing with offshore manufacturing.
  • Experience in or knowledge of outdoor power equipment compliance standards, specifically gasoline engines.
  • Mechanical intuition with strong “hands on” experience.
  • Experience designing plastic, die casting, and metalworking components.
  • Experience with manufacturing processes and executing new designs into a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience in product improvement and/or cost reduction projects.
  • Knowledge of and ability to design and test products which meet compliance standards.
  • Failure analysis and test data evaluation.
  • Packaging development and testing.
  • Development of on-product and in-manual safety and instructional messages.
