About The Study
The Neuroimaging of Trauma (NeT) study uses neuroimaging to understand more about how exposure to traumatic experiences in early adulthood affects the brain.
Who is Eligible?
Participants must be between 25 and 35 years old and:
Have experienced one or more traumatic event(s)
Currently experience symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (you may qualify even if you have never been diagnosed) OR experience no PTSD symptoms:
o You have difficulty falling and staying asleep
o You have nightmares or unwanted memories of a traumatic experience
o Unexpected noises make you jump
o You avoid situations that remind you of a traumatic experience
o You are tense, on-guard, irritable, or lose your cool over minor everyday things
o Your feelings and relationships have changed for the worse since your traumatic event
Be otherwise mentally and physically healthy
Meet other eligibility criteria
Getting Started
We will ask you some questions over the phone, and if you are a potential match for the study, we will invite you to an interview conducted remotely with one of our clinicians to gather information about your background, psychological history, and current symptoms. If you further qualify, we will invite you for another remote visit which includes cognitive tests, medical screening, and some questionnaires about your health and sleep habits. You will also have an MRI of the brain in-person at the San Francisco VA.
Participation
If circumstances permit, you will be contacted in the future and given the option to participate in additional assessments at the San Francisco VA, including a psychological interview, blood tests, and three days of computer learning tasks.
How long will I be in the Study?
You will be asked to come to the San Francisco VA for 1 day, as well as participate in 2 remote visits, with the option, if circumstance permit, to come to the San Francisco VA for an additional 4 days over the course of two weeks to 1 month.
Participants will receive
Up to $350 for completing all study procedures
