Family & Youth Services Librarian

Job Description

This is a part-time position, 10 hours per week, starting not before October 1, 2020. The rate of pay is $18.00 per hour; there are no benefits. The position is funded for one year as a trial, outcome-oriented position; based on the outcomes achieved in the first year, the position may be funded beyond that year.

The specific hours will be fixed based on community needs and may change as those needs change (especially during the present when school scheduling is in flux). The person in this position will do a combination of in-person, direct service work in the library and outreach in the community, outside of library hours. This is not a remote position.

Desired outcomes in year one (October 2020 - September 2021)

Increased youth visits to the library (youth is children aged 0-18 years)

Increased family visits to the library

Increased circulation of children’s materials (books, audiobooks, DVDs)

Increased youth and family programming and attendance at that program

Increased responses that families and youth see the library as a place for them

Ongoing communication with the preschools, elementary school, and high school

Responsibilities:

Outreach

Maintain regular contact with NewBrook Elementary (librarian, principal, PTO, teachers) and Leland & Gray HS (librarian, principal, and internship/volunteer coordinator), Timson Hill Preschool, Suzy’s Little Peanuts in Brookline, RiseVT, West River Valley Thrives and other local organizations that serve Newfane and Brookline students to promote MFL and to find out how to meet the needs of students and parents at the schools.

Books for Babies

Identify babies born each year in Newfane and create a package of materials (including books and library information) to give to the families. Follow up with these families to encourage them to visit the library.

Month of the Young Child

April is the “Month of the Young Child.” Organize events in conjunction with the local (West River) group that coordinates this month of programming.

Summer Reading & School Vacation Programs

Coordinate and implement programs for summer reading and school vacation designed to engage children with reading and to see the library as a place “for them”

Homeschooling Hub

Reach out to homeschooling parents, and in conjunction with parents and NewBrook Elementary, create kits of circulating project materials that parents can use with their kids. Help the library become a useful resource for homeschoolers by understanding their needs and creating solutions for how the library can help them.

Promotion

Create and post flyers for events, post on Facebook, Instagram, Front Porch Forum (and other social media), post to library’s website calendar, create and send direct email newsletters for families or create content for general newsletter

Programming

Implement programs for youth and families based on input from the community. Use volunteers and paid performers, as well as your own time for this programming.

Circulation/Library Staffing

Be present at the library to conduct library operations and check books out to patrons.

Research/Continuing Education

Keep up to date with latest trends in library services for families and youth, stay abreast of popular books and movies for the collection. Look into grants to fund family/youth services at the library

Collection Development

Maintain the library’s collection of circulating materials for children (picture books, juvenile fiction and non-fiction, audiobooks on CD, DVD movies, etc) and for parents. Make recommendations for additions and deletions from the collection.
