The Senior Construction Manager is responsible for overseeing and ensuring the successful daily operation of construction activities under the direction of the Vice President – Experts in Your Home. The Senior Construction Manager oversees all major construction activities and personnel including project managers, superintendents, estimators and the field trade staff. The Senior Construction Manager leads and trains employees within the Construction Services Department. He/She will focus on marketing, bidding, scheduling, hiring, managing projects and managing professional trades such as carpenters and laborers. Additionally, the Senior Construction Manager is responsible for developing and maintaining positive working relationships with clients through outstanding service in an effort to develop additional business opportunities. The position plays a key role in achieving corporate objectives and for maintaining a safe and profitable business environment.

Essential Functions:

Providing leadership and management for the day to day operations of the division

Leading and supervising the direct reports including, project managers, estimators, superintendents, administrative staff, field manager(s), tradespersons by conducting effective, timely, consistent Employee Check-in, including coaching and developing each person to his/her fullest potential

Develop and implement training for staff in the area of construction management and technical skills within the construction field

Exercising sound fiscal decision making and ensuring overall sound profitability for the Construction division, by ensuring effective budgeting processes and providing clear financial policies and procedures

In conjunction with Human Resources, ensuring sound human resource management by establishing and maintaining effective hiring practices to ensure hiring the right people who fit and match The Hignell Companies core values. This will be achieved by utilizing established hiring practices that result in hiring properly skilled employees who fit the criteria for the job

Responsible for consistent, effective and regular performance and salary reviews for all employees using Oz Principles accountability models to promote a spirit of belief in self-responsibility

Coordinating and scheduling of jobs/job flow and employees to ensure effective use of time and resources

Oversees the bidding process to ensure competitive and profitable job bids. Has high expertise in bidding and estimating for a wide range of residential and commercial construction projects.

Ensures the department has a strong focus on and specific policies and procedures regarding safety and compliance to these procedures

Provides course correction for personnel through corrective action procedures.

Facilitates personnel in a leadership role by advising, training, and motivating.

Prepares, implements, manages, and completes action plans in order to improve productivity, improve quality, foster an attitude of customer-service, and identify and resolve problems as they arise.

Markets the Company’s construction services to new and existing clientele through preparation of proposals and other marketing materials.

Supervises daily scheduling of employees, vendors, and subcontractors.

Assists in the project billing process, including the completion and submission of appropriate billing forms.

Coordinates, schedules, and presents at internal meetings, as needed in support of ongoing projects.

Represents Company to customers and coordinates with customer for scheduling of work.

Proficient in reading plans and performing quantity take offs.

Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.

Regular attendance.

Travel as required.

Other Functions:

Enforces Company policies and safety procedures.

Regularly updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining professional networks, and participating in professional organizations.

Mental and Physical Demands:

Experiences frequent interruptions; required to meet inflexible deadlines; requires concentration and attention to detail; requires a high level of organizational and prioritization skills.

Required to sit for prolonged periods; exposed to visual display terminal for prolonged periods; dexterity and precision required in the operation of a computer.

The duties of this position are also performed in a field environment, at development and work sites on uneven and rough terrain.

Required to work in outside weather conditions, including heat, cold, and temperature swings, for extended periods of time.

Sitting up to 8 hours per day; Standing up to 8 hours per day; Walking up to 8 hours per day on uneven, difficult terrain at jobsites.

Limited heavy manual labor to include lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds, bending, stooping, climbing, squatting, and kneeling.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

The Senior Construction Manager supervises employees within the Experts in Your Home Department.

Core Competencies/Qualifications:

Must have five (5) or more years of demonstrated experience as a construction manager, project manager or equivalent experience in the construction industry.

California General Contractors license is preferred

Education in the field of construction management, architecture or engineering.

Experience managing private works and public works projects preferred.

Knowledge of applicable building codes, ordinances, and regulations.

Knowledge of local building trends, pricing and subcontracting community

Thorough understanding of all aspects of construction (technology, equipment, methods, etc.) as well as an understanding of industry practices, processes, and standards and their impact on project activities.

Thorough familiarity with bid process and review, project requirements, coordination of materials procurement, material requisition, submittal compilation, purchase orders, on-site job walkthroughs and meetings, change orders, request for information, pay application support, and close-out documents.

OSHA Experience

Proficient in Microsoft software (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Self-motivated with strong organizational, multi-tasking, planning and follow up skills.

Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.

Ability to present self in a professional manner and represent the Company image.

Demonstrated leadership and project success are expected.

Ability to work in fast paced environment.

Advanced abilities in reading and interpreting plans and specifications.
