GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

South Pass City State Historic Site is authorized to hire up to six seasonal positions for the summer of 2020. There are three different types of seasonal positions to be filled as part of this announcement: Interpreter/Store Clerk, Interpreter, and Maintenance

The employment season is from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Some seasonal positions may begin earlier in the year and/or extend longer into the fall. The actual length of employment depends on the work location and the type of job performed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.

Seasonal Visitor Services Associate – Interpreter/Store Clerk:

The position is split between two departments within the historic sitePrimary duties – 3 days a week include

  • Conduct public tours of South Pass City, the Carissa Mill & English Tunnel.

  • Conduct school tours.

  • Conduct public demonstrations of historic mining & milling technology.

  • Assist with large scale public events including Gold Rush Days & large tour groups.

  • Clean, & maintain exhibits.

  • Assist in handling fragile, rare, & unique objects under supervision.

  • Work with the curator & maintenance manager on historic building restoration & maintenance.

  • Occasional computer assignments dealing with scanning/ transcribing old documents into electronic format for use in research & exhibits.

  • Review of historical documents & images for use in interpretive programs.

  • Be ready for cross-training & assist other staff when necessary

Secondary duties – 2 days a week include

  • Conduct sales of store items.

  • Stock & display shelves in the store.

  • Collect admission from visitors.

  • Track daily attendance & maintain attendance database according to Wyoming State Parks & Historic Site procedures.

  • Conduct a review of inventory at the beginning of each season & a full inventory at the close of each season.

  • Open & close store during public hours of operation.

  • Maintain accurate cash drawer & ensure adequate cash for daily transactions.

  • Track daily sales.

Seasonal Maintenance Worker:

  • Conduct light construction maintaining historic & modern buildings.

  • Repair & maintenance of historic site fences.

  • Conduct daily janitorial work throughout the historic site.

  • Maintain grounds including mowing, trimming & limited irrigation.

  • Extensive painting on modern & historic structures.

  • Cross-train & assist other staff when necessary

  • Assist with school tours.

  • Assist with public demonstrations of historic mining & milling technology.

Seasonal Interpreter:

Qualifications

PREFERENCES/AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:

For all seasonal positions, preference will be given to applicants who are professional while providing excellent customer service.

Additionally, for the interpreter positions, preference will be given to applicants who are attending or have attended a college or university with a least a freshman standing and majoring in any of the natural sciences, history, cultural resource management, or interpretative services OR 2 to 3 years work experience as an interpreter with an organization that has natural or cultural resource responsibilities. Consideration will also be given to those with experience in a similar field such as mining, engineering, military operations, transportation or the judicial system.

Must have a valid driver's license.

Must be at least 16 years of age.KNOWLEDGE:

  • Skills in public speaking & written communications.

  • Ability to manage & complete multiple projects with variable timelines & scopes of work.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Google Docs, Square or relevant skills.

  • Experience with ladders and scaffolding.

  • Skill using small tools, landscaping equipment, & power equipment.

Necessary Special Requirements

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Must work outdoors in all weather conditions.

  • Must be able to lift at least 40 pounds, with or without assistance.

NOTES:

  • FLSA: Non-exempt
