Overview
Yap Health Services serves a population of 11,000. The laboratory, housed within the grounds of the 43 bed Yap state hospital performs clinical and public health testing and is the sole laboratory on the island. Yap laboratory is seeking to build its molecular testing capacity.
This position is directly under the supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor and Director of Health Services. The position is responsible for set up and validation of RT-PCR in addition to conducting other infectious disease testing as required. The laboratory technologist will be responsible for developing Standard Operating procedures for molecular testing in collaboration with National and Regional Laboratory Coordinators. The laboratory technologist will be responsible for training, competency testing and immediate and day to day supervision of other laboratory personnel in molecular testing. The position of Medical Technologist is broad in scope encompassing a strong background in basic sciences and at least 5 years of experience in infectious disease testing. Molecular test systems require strong attention to detail to perform DNA/RNA extractions and assays with specialized molecular techniques and analysis instrumentation. Key to performance will be efficiency in the daily workflow, proactive approach to training, and demonstration of solid team building and awareness.
Responsibilities
Performs complex molecular diagnostic DNA based tests
Ensures the laboratory is kept in a safe working environment and in compliance with OSHA and other laboratory safety standards.
Handle clinical samples and interface with the laboratory information management system.
Participate in Proficiency testing programs.
Train and supervise laboratorians in infectious disease testing
Assist in other areas of the laboratory as required
Minimum of five years laboratory work experience
Knowledge of PCR based procedures and PCR contamination control required.
Demonstrated supervisory experience

Qualifications
Experience with one or more of the following platforms:
COBAS
Biofire
Cepheid
Applied Biosystem ABI 7500
Manual microbiology techniques- microscopy, culture and sensitivity
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Medical technology or Biological Science
Nationally recognized certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) or a bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science preferred.
Certifications, Licenses and Registration Requirements: Must be eligible for registration with FSM Medical Licensing Board
