The Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) program has an immediate need for aLeadMechanical Systems Design and Analysis Engineerto support the continuous development work on the Ground Based Interceptor (GBI) fleet directed by the Missile Defense Agency. This Level 4 position is based in Vandenberg AFB, CA.The GMD System is the first and only operationally deployed missile defense program to defend the homeland against long-range ballistic missile attacks. The system provides early detection and tracking during the boost phase, midcourse target discrimination, precision intercept and destruction of inbound ICBMs through force of hit-to-kill technology. As prime contractor, Boeing is designing, producing, integrating, testing and sustaining all GMD components.Position Responsibilities:Develop and document mechanical system requirements for the GMD Ground Based Interceptor.Analyze and translate requirements into system architecture, hardware and software designs and interface specifications.Test and validate to ensure system designs meet operational and functional requirements.Monitor supplier performance to ensure system integration and compliance with requirements.Support fielded hardware and software over the entire product life-cycle.Coordinate with the 30th Space Wing, MDA, Boeing and suppliers on upcoming GMD flight tests and address test range concerns/issues.Provide guidance with test anomalies, Test Readiness Review planning, flight test mitigation testing, and risk reduction testing.Support the risk review boards and provide recommendations and information, including risk briefings, reviewing packages and creating briefing packages.Review drawings and specification updates made by Boeing suppliers.Work Authorization:This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S Security Clearance for which the US Government requires US Citizenship. (Interim)Basic Qualifications (Required Skills / Experience):Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry required.3+ years of experience performing mechanical designs with large complex systems.2 years of experience defining test plans, procedures, and reports to validate performance specifications.2 years of experience analyzing risks issues and opportunities.Willingness to travel at least 20% of the time as required.Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills / Experience):Must possess good organizational, interpersonal, and problem solving skills.Must have demonstrated a strong work ethic and sense of urgency for completing assigned work with a history of meeting commitments.Ability to adjust priorities to multiple demands and unanticipated events.Coaches and mentors personnel.Highly motivated and must work well in a team environment.The ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.Experience working on Missile Defense programs with avionics hardware and software.Experience in aerospace industry and with equivalent products.Experience across a breadth of disciplines including hardware, software, systems and test.Typical Education / Experience:Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 9 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+4 years' related work experience, Master+7 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.Relocation:This position is located in a location that does not offer relocation.
