Job Details and Requirement :

BASIC FUNCTION :

This position is responsible for performing all duties associated with the repair and maintenance of the irrigation systems pertaining to the athletic fields, parkway grass, planters, open and natural areas in a College setting.

This includes understanding the operation and location of various controller boxes, backflows, gate valves and station valves.

Must understand or have the ability to learn the basic operations of the HydroPoint WeatherTrak irrigation system.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Grounds Operations, performs or works independently / collaboratively to perform the following essential duties and responsibilities :

Remote field testing of each station utilizing provided iPad.

Locate all backflows on campus and the areas they affect.

Know the locations of all controller boxes, gate valves, and each station on campus.

Understand and troubleshoot valve operations and components including solenoids and diaphragm replacement.

Inspect, troubleshoot, and replace broken sprinklers and valves.

Must test all repairs for proper operation after completion.

Maintain an organized inventory of all assigned tools, irrigation supplies, and equipment.

Dig trenches with hand tools, repair irrigation, and restore turf to its original condition.

Participate in composting and mulching activities.

Participate in landscape activities such as blowing, sweeping, line trimming or mowing.

Participate in the lining of athletic fields.

Regular attendance is considered an essential job function. The inability to meet attendance requirements may preclude the employee from retaining employment.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS :

EDUCATION : Any combination of education, training and / or experience equivalent to High School Diploma or GED that provides the required knowledge, skills and ability.

EXPERIENCE : Minimum of three years hands on irrigation experience including troubleshooting, repairing, and performing preventative maintenance is required.

Minimum of one year paid employment experience in groundskeeping assignments is required.

Experience in landscape or golf course industry is preferred.

LICENSES : A valid driver’s license is required to drive College-owned vehicles and the ability to be insured under the College’s authorized driver’s policy.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS : Must be able to stand, walk, bend, climb, push, pull, stop, twist, stretch, and lift up to 50 pounds from ground to waist level without assistance.

Must be able to climb ladders up to 6 feet unassisted and work on feet for prolonged periods of time. Must take and successfully pass a functional capacity test after job offer and prior to hire.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES : Individual must possess knowledge, skills, and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of knowledge skills and abilities.

Operate the College’s vehicles safely for campus-related work and meet all insurance-related requirements.

Must understand or have ability to learn the basic operations of the HydroPoint WeatherTrak irrigation system.

Must possess knowledge of maintenance, use, safe operation, and repair of cleaning supplies, tools and equipment. Must have knowledge of cleaning chemicals.

Must have knowledge of safe working methods and procedures.

Must be able to effectively and efficiently clean and maintain an assigned landscaped area within a predetermined time schedule.

Must be able to establish daily priorities.

Must be able to adapt successfully to changing situations or circumstances.

Requires ability to learn proper use of fire extinguishers.

Must have ability to work well without continuous supervision.

Must wear uniform and safety equipment as required.

Performs multiple tasks and responds to others in a timely manner. Works both independently and as a collaborative member of the department and the College.

Demonstrate effective, accurate and clear communication with strong verbal, written, interpersonal, reading, and customer service skills.

Follow all written and verbal instructions, asking questions as needed for clarification of tasks and assignments.

Use strong organizational and time management skills to complete work with accuracy and a keen attention to detail.

Must be able to understand and follow basic instructions in English, both orally and written.

OTHER :

REQUIRED HOURS : The regular hours for this full time position are 6 : 30 a.m. to 3 : 00 p.m., Monday Friday. Overtime, holiday, weekend and evening work hours may be required.

Regular hours may vary due to needs of the College or department. This is a 12-month position.

GROOMING AND APPEARANCE : The Claremont Colleges seek to maintain a neat and professional image at all times. A uniform is required and will be provided.
