We are looking for an enthusiastic individual with experience working with at-risk populations to join the Family Support Services (FSS) team! The Parent Educator will collaborate with parents, school administrators, and public and private entities to support families in establishing safe and nurturing parenting practices, strengthen understanding of developmental milestones, and guide families in overcoming obstacles to self-sufficiency. Utilizing the Protective Factors Framework, the parent educator will provide and/or link families to comprehensive services in support of a child’s lifelong learning, health, and behavior. Through screening and assessment, parent education, case management, and service linkage, the parent educator will identify risks, promote strengths, and equip parents with the skills and knowledge needed to provide nurturing environments and overcome sources of stress.

This position is responsible for teaching curriculum throughout Santa Barbara County and can have a primary work location of any of FSA’s offices in Santa Maria, Lompoc, or Santa Barbara. Please note: Due to COVID-19, many of our services are being provided via phone and videoconferencing. Flexible schedules and work-from-home opportunities are also available within the local tri-county area (Santa Barbara, SLO, and/or Ventura counties).

Sample of Duties and Responsibilities

Facilitate parenting classes and workshops using approved curriculum.

Coordinate parenting classes with co-facilitator and other participating community partners.

Conduct recruitment and manage participant waitlist.

Complete pre-program evaluation to ensure the curriculum is tailored to the needs and identified risks of participants.

Participate in activities to evaluate the program’s effectiveness.

Demonstrate knowledge of local resources and provide information and referral when warranted.

Utilize assessment skills and screening tools to triage families and determine appropriate services (case management, information and referral, parent education).

Classification, Hours and Pay Rate:

The position has full and part-time opportunities available. Please indicate in your application how many hours you are looking for (up to 40.0 hours/week).

The position includes benefits, depending on how many hours worked per week:

Positions working less than 30 hours/week are eligible for: vacation accrual, sick leave accrual, holidays, and eligibility for flexible spending accounts and 403(b) retirement account.

Positions working 30+ hours/week are eligible for: medical, dental, and vision insurance, as well as vacation and sick leave accrual, holidays, and eligibility for flexible spending accounts and 403(b) retirement account.

Pay is dependent on experience.

Requirements

Employment Standards:

Bachelor’s degree required in social work, child development, education, or other related field.

Bilingual in English and Spanish required.

Familiarity with community resources and knowledge of early education and childhood development desired.

Professional attitude, good judgement, teamwork, and ability to maintain confidentiality a must.

Ability to have a warm and empathic interpersonal style in order to establish trusting relationships a must.

Must be flexible and able to work independently and as a part of a team.
