Job Summary

The Lead Operations and Maintenance Technician is a very experienced technician responsible for monitoring the status of all plant systems on a continuous basis and providing maintenance and repair of all instruments, control systems and electrical equipment in the power plant.

The Lead O&M Tech responds to alarms by taking appropriate corrective actions, identifies events and trends as they occur in real time to minimize downtime, and executes plant shut-down / start-up and Emergency Operating procedures as required.

The Lead O&M Tech performs work of high skill in the inspection, repair, testing, adjustment and installation of all electronic systems.

The Lead O&M Tech assures that the plant meets its generating requirements while operating in a safe and efficient manner.

Job Functions

Report upset conditions or other anomalies in plant status to the Plant Manager and Owners. Make entries in the Operating Log and approve and issue Lock out Tag out, LOTO as required.

Perform preventative maintenance duties on all major equipment and systems as well as emergency backup systems.

Maintain complete equipment files, logs and drawings.

Perform emergency operations (procedure usage and development) to maintain electric service and safeguard station equipment.

The Lead O&M Tech operates from established and well-known procedures under general directions and minimum supervision.

Decisions are made within prescribed operating and casualty procedures and guidelines. The Lead O&M Tech encounters recurring work situations of high complexity with occasional variations from the norm.

Inspect repair, install and remove all types of motors, generators, transformers, switches, control equipment, wiring, electrical signal and communication systems, and storage batteries, and work with electrical systems up to and including 4160 volts.

Plan and coordinate mechanical, electrical, and technical contract maintenance activities

The Lead O&M Tech has the authority to control the operation of the plant, and must do so in a safe manner resulting in no accidents, in compliance with all environmental permits NERC related permits at all times.

The Lead O&M Tech must effectively communicate information to plant leadership team relative to the condition of the plant equipment and performance, and provide suggestions for plant improvements.

Communicate the Plants daily availability and any other risks to generation during the morning production meeting including Safety, Environmental, Production, Maintenance and be able to discuss any risk to the day ahead Operations.

Contact vendors and contractors to obtaining quotes or estimates for goods and services.

Review specifications, scope of work, and pricing with appropriate Managers.

Complete audit of inventory as determined in the Administrative Manual.

Correct issues, errors, and discrepancies in a timely manner.

Forecast, inventory, and reorder spare parts to maintain plant reliability. Assist in physical inventories.

Education and Experience An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered.

Ability to understand procedures, write procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school.

Minimum of six years of experience as an Assistant Plant Operator or equivalent position in an operating or generating plant required.

Associate Degree in a technical field desirable.

Must be skilled in the use of hand and power driven tools.

Must have excellent organizational skills. Experience in working with voltages up to 4160 volts highly desirable. Must have strong personal computer skills.

Requires strong personal computer skills specifically in Word, Excel, Project and CMMS.

Must successfully complete a Mechanical Aptitude test and a Basic Mathematical test.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities which may be representative, but not all-inclusive of those commonly associated with this position.

Must possess proficient math skills, good verbal communications skills, and be proficient with the use of power and precision tools.

Ability to prioritize work and produce professional and accurate results under aggressive timelines.

Must be able to take direction, identify problems, develop solutions, and conduct analysis independently and in collaboration with others.

Must know the hazards involved and the safety precautions to be practiced in the operation and maintenance of power plant equipment and machinery.

Work within and insure strict adherence to all safety practices and procedures.

Must be able to respond to audio alarms and variations of sound.

Proficient data entry / computer skills

Work as a team. Must be able to pool our knowledge and energy to work in tandem to completely understand and productively respond to all of the business challenges.

Work Environment Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.

Protective equipment such as hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves, high voltage protective equipment and other equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties.

Work with hazardous materials may be required.

Requires working extended working hours, varied shifts or 12 hour shifts with weekend and holiday work as required by schedules, workload and plant conditions.

On call status (day and night) may be required.

Includes working indoors and outdoors.

Must be able to work in elevated areas, confined spaces and in extreme heat and cold condition.
