Job Description

Job Summary: The Electrical Engineer is responsible for the design of various electrical components of surgical robots. The surgical robots include active and passive electromechanical arms of various degrees of freedom, lifts, and a cutting system. Component and system designing include position sensors, actuators, microprocessors, motion control boards, computers, power supplies, power distribution, documentation and verification and validation tests.

Travel Requirements: ≤10% Travel to collaboration sites is occasionally required.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Electrical design of surgical robot components:

    • Create or modify the design of real-timesurgical robot systems and components, including manipulator arms and their motion control, coordinate digitizers, lifts, position & force sensors, computer control, networking, power supply and distribution, digital and analog data I/O, and data communication protocols.
    • Evaluate and improve cable design and routing.
    • Create or update PCBA design and documentation.
    • Perform risk analysis to identify hazards and mitigation methods.
    • Create test protocols and perform verification, validation, and functional evaluation of the robotic system and its electrical/electronic components.
    • Analyze test results and prepare detailed, accurate, and conclusive reports.
    • Manage monitoring and all testing activities required to ensure compliance with the latest IEC 60601-1 standard (Safety & EMC/EMI).
    • Provide support to drafters with questions related to electrical documentation.
    • Assist in non-conforming material disposition, troubleshooting of the technical issues, and occasional training activities of manufacturing and field service engineers.

  • Review existing and new technologies and translate them into products that will improve the effectiveness, safety, manufacturability and usability of the device.
  • Manage design and development projects accordingto company’s Design Control procedures.
  • Responsible for electrical design documentation release and transfer to production.
  • Execute work in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Interface with other functional departmentsincluding engineering, quality assurance, regulatory affairs, manufacturing, and supply chain toensure effective collaboration and teamwork.
  • Work with outside vendors and consultants.
  • Other duties or special projects as required to meet company’s objectives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and 5+ years of experience in medical devicedevelopment as an electrical engineer. Knowledge and experience inrobotics are desired.
  • Real-time motionand machine control experience is required.
  • Experiencewith schematic capture tools; Altium is preferred.
  • Understandingof optical, magnetic, or vision position technologies, principles, andknowledge of commercially available devices.
  • Experiencein standard bench test equipment such as oscilloscopes, functiongenerators, logic analyzers, protocol analyzers, etc.
  • Recent,product-focused experience designing multilayered PC boards includingactual hands-on board layout, bring-up, and debug experience.
  • Proven experience with EMI/EMC compliance challenges, design for reliability, anddesign for manufacturability.
  • Experience serial communication implementations at the protocol layer using transports such as LVDS, IEEE-1394, USB, and CAN. Experience with EtherCAT technology is strongly desired.
  • Experience implementing microcontroller, FPGA, and/or CPLD-based designs at the architect level.
  • Knowledge of IPC-A-610E, Acceptability of Electronic Assembly
  • Knowledge of ANSI/ESD, Protection of Electrical and Electronic Parts, Assemblies and Equipment (Excluding Electrically Initiated Explosive Devices).
  • Competent in all phases of the product development life cycle including design, implementation, debug, verification, qualification, design transfer, and maintenance.
  • Knowledgeand experience with Microsoft Windows and Office Products
  • Knowledge of good manufacturing practices (GMP) and applicable Quality System Standards, such as ISO 13485:2012, FDA 21 CFR Part 820, EN 14971:2012.
  • Attendance and Punctuality are essential function of the position.
  • Hands-onengineering, proven ability to work well in a team environment.
