SummaryThis position functions in all the patient care areas of pharmacy service and can be assigned to either outpatient or inpatient services. The pharmacy technician represents the pharmacy in the medical center and is to follow all established hospital and pharmacy service policies and procedures to ensure high quality care of the Veteran. This position assists with pharmacy related duties as assigned by the supervisor or lead pharmacist.ResponsibilitiesDuties include but are not limited to: Inpatient services may include but not limited to such areas as aseptic admixture, automatic and on-demand ward stock replenishment, maintenance and operation of automated prepackaging and dispensing equipment, properly packaging with documentation of single unit of use medications, and filling and delivering patient medications. Outpatient services may include but not limited to outpatient prescription filling, pharmacy phone triage, window prescription dispensing, maintenance and operation of automated prescription dispensing equipment, and packaging of mail out prescriptions. Assists as deemed necessary by the pharmacy supervisor, in any patient care area (including inpatient and outpatient pharmacy) to maintain the consistency of overall pharmacy services. Work Schedule: 1:30 pm to 10:00 pm, 3 pm to 11:30 pm; 7:00 am to 3:30 pm; 8:00 am to 4:30 pm; or other shifts deemed necessary based on needs of the service. Financial Disclosure Report: Not requiredRequirementsConditions of EmploymentQualificationsBasic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education or Experience: A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience. Certification: Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above. English Language Proficiency: Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part. Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met: (a) Experience: One year experience at the next lower level and must fully meet the KSAs at the next lower level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (): (b) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 1. Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action.

Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment.

Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents.

Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products.

Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts.

Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders. Physical Requirements: Requires frequent movement within work areas, regular and recurring bending, stooping, and stretching, standing for long periods, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
