Fire Protection SpecialistDescriptionSummaryThis position provides project support and/or discipline support for various projects by researching, specifying, developing, designing, engineering or testing of fire and gas detection and suppression systems. Individuals are expected to apply engineering principles, methods and techniques to the project assignments.Position can be full or part-time and can be filled as an Anchorage-based position or remote work-from-home depending on company needs.Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Researches and analyzes data such as client design proposals, specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application.

Works with clients to develop a project’s scope of work, estimates, and/or schedules.

Reviews and approves project drawings, standards and specifications.

Develops major equipment, material selection, and construction specifications.

Uses computer assisted engineering and design software and equipment to perform engineering tasks.

Directs and coordinates construction, installation, fabrication and/or operational testing activities to ensure services, products and/or systems conform to engineering design and client criteria.

Ensures that all assigned activities and operations comply with applicable codes, regulations and laws.

Evaluates field installations and recommends design modifications.

Coordinates activities with other project disciplines involved in fabrication, operation, application, and installation or repair of various materials, products or systems.

Provides technical direction, support and information to other specialists, engineers, designers and drafters.

Senior or Principal level may be assigned administrative and personnel leadership for the FP Engineering section as needed.

Consistently demonstrates professional skills in structuring assigned activities, creativity, teamwork, communications, operational efficiencies, handling of a client’s changing needs, decision making, and analyzing and solving problems.

Other duties as assigned.

High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Minimum 10 years of experience in fire protection design or engineering.

Minimum NICET Certification Level III in Fire Alarm and Special Hazards suppression systems or Alaska State Fire Systems Design Permit with IC and IIIC endorsements.

North Slope, Arctic, or Oil & Gas projects experience

Preferred

NICET Certification Level III in Water-based fire suppression or systems or Alaska State Fire Systems Design Permit with IIC endorsement

Additional NICET or other National agency fire suppression design certifications

State of Alaska Dry Chemical Fire Suppression design permits

State of Alaska fire extinguisher permits

Manufacturer training in fire alarm or fire suppression system design or installation

Current NSTC Card

Associates or Bachelors Degree in Fire Protection Engineering or Fire Protection Technology from an accredited institution.

Language Ability:Read, analyze and interpret technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Write routine reports and correspondence. Respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.Math Ability:Math skills sufficient to: Add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Compute rate, ratio, and percent. Draw and interpret bar graphs.Reasoning Ability:Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Interpret an extensive variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.Computer Skills:Ability to operate a keyboard and calculator by touch. Safety and SecurityObserves safety and security procedures.Working Conditions and Physical RequirementsThe position requires a person that is able to travel and work in a remote location overnight or longer. The employee is occasionally exposed to work near mechanical parts; work in high, precarious places; toxic or caustic chemicals and adverse outdoors weather conditions. The employee is expected to abide by all required safety regulations, behaviors and conditions, as required at the local or remote work locations.The noise level in the work environment is usually high in the Process Areas and requires Hearing Protection. Work in Anchorage will be in a high-rise office building in a private office.Physical Demands:The physical demands described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level is usually quiet.Some company locations and projects require the employee to travel to remote industrial facilities which will require the employee to fly in aircraft of various sizes and visit the production facilities where excessive noise, heat and cold temperature will be experienced.
