The position actively collaborates with the Statewide TSMO Program Manager, Assistant District Engineer, and District Staff Engineers.All TSMO program areas and services are coordinated collaboratively, including technologies and services for: The Traffic Management Center (TMC), Traffic Incident Management (TIM), Emergency Transportation Operations (ETO), Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), Emergency Management, monitoring of Work Zone Operations (WZO), and TSMO research and decision support. Location: District 1 office in Ames, Iowa Shift: Days, Monday – Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm Pay Range: $86,528.00 to $123,155.20 annually As a TSMO Engineer, your duties will include, but are not limited to:
Administer, oversee and coordinate the TSMO activities for District 1, which includes 12 counties, 100+ cities, and the major metro areas of Des Moines, Ankeny and Ames.
Serve as the District’s traffic expert
Manage traffic flow on the primary road system
Create traffic control plans on projects
Deploy ITS technology
Develop staging Plans
Manage the District Traffic Incident Management (TIM) Program
Analyze systems data and manage system performance
Investigate and provide solutions to operational concerns
Review traffic safety and impact studies
Participates in agency initiatives for engagement, growth and improvement

Valid driver’s license
Must have, or prior to appointment, must obtain an active Iowa Professional Engineering license through the Iowa Professional Licensing Bureau-Engineering and Land Surveying Examination Board.
Must have a certificate as a Professional Traffic Operations Engineer or have the ability to gain the certification within one year of appointment.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:1) All of the following (a and b):a. Licensure as a professional engineer; andb. Four years of full-time professional work experience in transportation engineering or civil engineering.2) All of the following (a, b, and c):a. Licensure as a professional engineer; andb. Three years of full-time professional work experience in transportation engineering or civil engineering; andc. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in chemical, civil, construction, environmental, materials, structural, or transportation engineering; engineering management; or a field closely related to transportation engineering.3) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes 18 months of full-time work as a Transportation Engineer Specialist or Transportation Engineer Manager.For additional information, please click on this link to view the job description.
