Organization and Job IDJob ID: 311246Directorate: Energy and Environment DirectorateDivision: Earth Systems ScienceGroup: Environmental Subsurface ScienceJob DescriptionThe Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s Environmental Subsurface Science Group advances technologies for environmental remediation and subsurface energy systems with a broad spectrum of expertise in the earth sciences. We provide integrated solutions for complex subsurface systems to solve the nation’s most critical environmental and energy challenges. The Group is seeking a Chief Geophysicist that is a recognized national and international expert in geophysics applied to subsurface science. In particular, we are seeking candidates who can develop and advance Division strategies in applied and computational geophysics. The Chief Geophysicist should be comfortable working with key sector managers and researchers from across the organization to establish new programs with forward-reaching capabilities based on innovative combinations of capabilities within and outside of the Group. The Chief Geophysicist will be expected to lead geophysics project teams and programs that influence operations towards strategic lab initiatives with national and/or international impact.

Work with researchers, sector managers and sponsors to propose, develop, and execute original ideas which will influence lab-level R&D strategies and objectives in applied and computational geophysics.

Key leader in collaborating with other national laboratories, academia and industry to execute laboratory and sponsor strategic geophysics initiatives.

Key leader of laboratory and/or cross-directorate teams that influence lab-wide operations and strategies.

Publish research in leading peer-reviewed journals.

Present research efforts and technical work products at national and international forums.

Participate and initiate business development opportunities.

Train and mentor mid to senior level staff.

Minimum Qualifications

Level 5: BS/BA with 9 years of experience; MS/MA with 7 years of experience; or PhD with 5 years of experience

Level 6: BS/BA with 11 years of experience; MS/MA with 9 years of experience; or PhD with 7 years of experience

Preferred Qualifications

PhD in geophysical or computational subsurface science or engineering and 10 or more years of progressively responsible project or program leadership experience.

Outstanding scientific research and technical leadership in interfacial biogeochemistry, geophysical or computational subsurface science or engineering as evidenced by publications, citations, presentations, and/or other relevant metrics.

A record of success in developing new program funding initiatives within engineered and computational geophysics and a network of contacts with program sponsors relevant to the Earth Systems Science Division.

A record of effective leadership and teamwork (interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills) in a complex scientific organization and a demonstrated scientific vision and ability to collaborate across business units to build, maintain, and market capabilities.
