Employment Type:Part timeShift:Description:Phlebotomist needed for 24 hours per week, primarily on the dayshift. Hours fluctuate from 530am - 530pm. Includes rotating weekends and holidays.Job DescriptionPOSITION PURPOSEUnder general supervision and following established procedures, obtains various venous and capillary blood specimens needed for laboratory tests. Responsible for order entry of test orders, specimen processing and preparation of specimens for transportation and distribution. Verifies patient and specimen identification throughout process and provides important interface between patients and clients and the laboratoryESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIESPerforms venipuncture and capillary blood draws.Acts as a representative of the department, communicating with patients, patient care units, and physician offices.Understands and supports the Mission, Vision and Guiding Behaviors of SJMHS/SJMC and the Department regarding commitment to quality patient care.Provides quality patient care.Responds to inquiries in a courteous and helpful manner following departmental policies, procedures and systems.Understands laboratory requisitions and how to locate missing or incomplete information.Must be able to work minimal supervision.Distributes samples to appropriate testing areaReceives and processes orders from HIS and other electronic ordering systems.Troubleshoots problems related to missing specimens, discrepancies between specimens and orders.Performs Laboratory Information System (LIS) standard order entry.Prints daily CPR and resolves problems. Performs CLN for specimen tracking lists and lab-collected specimens.Prints patient chart reports and distributes them.Logs in specimens received into LIS. Create Specimen tracking lists.Determines in consultation with Med Tech acceptability of specimen (condition, timing and container type, etc.)Positively ID specimens against requisitions and labels specimens with accession number.Completes specimen handling and processing including centrifuging all tubes and aliquotting.Processes Microbiology, body fluid, and CSF specimens including detection of discrepancies or missing sources consulting with nursing station or physician as needed.Documents and follows up on problemsFollows test cancellation policy including when to complete problem log and when to perform CTS (test cancellation).Knows when and where to look for specimens and how and when to add tests to previously collected specimens.Retrieves results from laboratory computer and reports via telephone when appropriate.Arranges for specimen transport using established procedure. Completes MCE.Meets hospital/laboratory educational requirements.Performs and documents routine quality control of equipment (centrifuge, refrigerator temperatures). (Duty not required at Livingston & CCH)Aliquots and pHs 24 hour urine specimens.Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution.Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, employees, and visitors to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Discusses patient and hospital only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places.Assumes responsibility for of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report preventable hazards and practices immediately to management.OTHER FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIESPerforms other duties as assigned.REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION/LICENSUREOne year of post-high school education in a related field and one year of clinical laboratory experience OR high school diploma or equivalent and two years of laboratory experience which includes specimen processing, computer data entry and phlebotomy.REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIESAbility to read physician orders and verify patient identification, to write in order to maintain logs and records, and to understand and follow written and verbal instructionsInterpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with patients and other health care professionals.Analytical skills necessary to select the best site for obtaining bloodAbility to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when performing job responsibilities.Ability to work and stand for approximately 60% of work time.Organizational skills necessary to prioritize work.This document is intended to describe the generalized duties and responsibilities, the specialized job functions, and the essential requirements of this job.
