Position Specific Description
NextEra Energy, Inc. is a leader in innovation, technology and, with the help of subsidiary Florida Power & Light Company (FPL), is moving Florida’s economy forward.
FPL created its Office of Economic Development (OED) in the depths of the Great Recession to help attract businesses to expand in or relocate to Florida, creating jobs and bolstering the economy in the process.
Since its creation in 2011, the OED has helped create more than 244,000 direct and indirect jobs in the state, resulting in an almost $90 billion impact on Florida’s economy.
This internship position within FPL’s OED will provide mentoring and practical hands-on experience in a corporate setting with trips offsite (may include offsite team meetings and OED-sponsored events within Florida).
It offers challenging projects and assignments. It offers exposure to business unit activities; leadership and culture (i.
e. staff meetings, networking, and meetings with key personnel, and exposure to industries and companies external to FPL).
Key areas of responsibility within the Department which may require support include :
Statewide economic development strategy for Florida : Responsible for aiding the team in executing FPLOED’s economic development strategy within the state of Florida
Undetermined project : Responsible for completing an as-yet undetermined project supporting FPLOED’s economic development activities.
Past projects included developing an inventory of sustainable assets for each community in Florida and developing messaging about sustainability for use in recruiting companies to the state
Support Services : Responsible for aiding the team with research necessary for supporting the team’s economic development projects.
Ideal candidates will preferably be seeking an Economics, Business, or Political Science bachelor's degree, but we will consider candidates of other majors as well, and have an interest in pursuing a career in the utility or public policy sectors.
Candidate must also be organized, self-motivated, outgoing and understanding that much of the summer may be without direct supervision due to the team’s travel commitments.
That said, they will receive plenty of support from the team, but being willing and able to work independently and not shy about asking for help will serve them well.
The candidate must also have excellent written and oral communication skills, along with proficiency with Microsoft Office.
Job Overview
To be considered for an internship, you must be actively enrolled at a college or university as a full-time student seeking a bachelor’s degree or higher.
You must also have a current cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher (on a 0.00 to 4.00 scale).
Job Duties & Responsibilities
Assists department with assigned projects
Completes challenging projects and assignments
Presents final project to senior leadership at the end of the internship
Assumes responsibility for own travel, lodging, and transportation necessary to be available for the program
Performs other job-related duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
High school grad / GED
Maintain active enrollment in a Bachelor or higher degree program
Maintain cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
