Our Young Adult Unit is a 14-bed unit located on our Towson Campus that
serves adult patients ages 18 to 30 who suffer from one or more
psychiatric disorders. Our experienced staff has the capability to treat
a wide range of psychiatric disorders, including, but not limited to:
bipolar disorder, depression, and first-break psychosis.General Summary:Under the general direction of the nurse leader, supervises the
day-to-day operations of assigned inpatient unit(s). Ensures
appropriate nursing staffing to provide optimum coverage; assigns rooms;
and ensures the quality of patient care and milieu. Reviews
documentation to ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation
requirements. Utilizes clinical expertise in the delivery of direct
patient care, consultative activities, staff development, and treatment
planning. Participates in promoting effective team building, quality
improvement, strong patient/customer relations, evidenced-based practice
improvements, budget introduction work and screens candidates for RN,
Mental Health Worker and unit support positions in collaboration with
the nurse leader. Trains and orients staff to unit; provides
supervision in the absence of the nurse leader. Provides significant
input into performance appraisals. Orients and supervises
volunteers. Observes the disciplinary and corrective action processes
through mentorship of the nurse leader.This job may serve as training for future Unit Managers. Upon
completion of a training period and demonstration of leadership skills,
as determined by nursing leadership, incumbents in this position may
transition into Unit Manager roles.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:Work requires graduation from an accredited program of nursing
(BSN preferred) and possession of a current license as a Registered
Nurse in the State of Maryland at the time of appointment and
continuously while in position.
Work requires clinical and managerial skills, knowledge of
psychiatric nursing, and comprehensive knowledge of diagnosis and
treatment of assigned patient population - acquired through two to three
years of progressively more responsible inpatient psychiatric nursing
experience.
Work requires interpersonal skills sufficient to provide
effective leadership for assigned personnel and to interact effectively
with psychiatrically and physically ill patients, family members,
visitors and a variety of Sheppard Pratt departments (51 to 80% of work
time).
Work requires analytical and problem-solving abilities
necessary to reassign nursing staff to meet programming demands of unit;
screen applicants (with supervision of nurse leader); identify training
needs; and resolve nursing and administrative issues in absence of the
nurse leader.
