Job Summary

Under the direct supervision of the charge nurse, assists with emergency outpatients and performs approved duties. Reports to the Nurse Manager, Charge Nurse, and / or Shift Supervisor.

Job Requirements Minimum Education A high school diploma or equivalent required. Minimum Work Experience Experience in emergency department desired but not required.

Previous experience as an Emergency Room Technician or Operating Room Technician is preferred. Current CPR review required.

Employee must demonstrate ability to recognize patients' individual needs based on medical conditions, age (infants, pediatrics, adolescents, young adults, middle-aged and geriatric), limitations and planned procedures.

Requires ability to work well with others and to function in stressful situations, along with the ability to perform some special skills and operate special equipment.

Required Skills Previous experience upon hire with phlebotomy, ER will validate by observing 10 sticks. Employee will then have 90 days to obtain their phlebotomy certification.

Employee will be responsible for the cost of the certification.If new hire do not have phlebotomy experience, they will need to obtain the phlebotomy certification by their first or second week of orientation.

Complies with organizational and regulatory policies for handling confidential patient information. Demonstrates excellent customer service through his / her attitude and actions, consistent with the standards contained in the Vision, Mission, and Values of the organization.

Adheres to professional standards, hospital policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and TJC standards and / or standards from other accrediting bodies.

Essential Functions 1. Transports patients using wheelchair or stretcher within the hospital and to and from vehicles. 2.

Assists those patients requiring help with ambulation. 3. Provides general and basic patient care, such as positioning patients, lifting and turning, assisting in use of bedpan, commode, and urinal or bathroom.

4. Answers and responds to call lights or uses intercom to determine patient needs, and advises nurse of needs beyond scope of position.

5. Cleans and changes stretcher linen between patients and as needed during patient visit. 6. Empties dirty laundry. 7. Labels, bags, and delivers samples to lab per hospital protocol.

8. Assists patients to dress and undress and cares for patient belongings, including bagging and labeling same. Cares for valuable according to policy.

9. Restocks linen and supplies in exam rooms, fills blanket warmer, and provides general cleaning. 10. Answers phone calls, calls consulting physicians as directed by physicians and other staff members, makes appointments as directed by physicians or other staff members.

11. Reviews charge sheets and enters charges into AS-400. 12. Provides direct observation for confused or psychiatric patients.

13. Performs routine, uncomplicated treatment procedures such as splinting limbs, wound cleansing, taking vital signs, chaperones pelvic and rectal examinations.

14. Sets up for suturing and procedures, dismantles procedure set appropriately. 15. Immediately reports any observed changes in condition or behavior of patients and documents any care given.

Immediately reports any unusual incidents to primary nurse, charge nurse, or nurse manager. 16. Responsible for daily checking and stocking of treatment rooms and procedural carts to ensure more efficient patient treatment.

17. Standard precautions are exercised with all patients and procedures. 18. Patients are appropriately identified prior to any intervention per hospital protocol.

19. Knowledge of institutions fire / safety / infection control programs is consistently demonstrated in practice. 20. Annual mandatory training activities are completed within established time frames.

21. Performs other duties as assigned or directed and within the scope of abilities. Functional Demands Prolonged periods of standing, walking, or sitting while on duty.

Lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 50 pounds with or without assistance.Transferring, repositioning patients.Reaching, stooping, bending, kneeing, and crouching for patient care functions.

Visual and auditory acuity and manual dexterity essential to performing designated duties required.Optimal auditory acuity required.

Manual dexterity involving the handling of equipment and instruments or needles is essential to performing assigned duties.

Ability to perform effectively in a stressful and fast-paced environment.Ability to pass all required health and other screening tests.

Physical conditions are clean, neat and well lit. Maybe subjected to unpleasant sights and odors, stressful situations and hazardous or infectious agents where judgment as to precautions need to be taken is essential.

Climate control and ambient temperature variances may be experienced. Exposure to limited amounts of hazardous chemicals or substances and infectious disease processes are a possibility.

Hours of duty maybe irregular or unexpectedly extended due to emergency circumstances.Direct contact with blood or other body fluids to which universal precautions apply.

Personal protective equipment is made available and must be worn.
