About Us

Anxiety and depression are growing issues among kids and teenagers. United Way’s EveryDay Strong project is on a mission to empower parents and other caring adults to know how to build resilience in children.

We’ve already reached over twenty thousand families. As the Volunteer Sustainability VISTA, you have the chance to work together with the program director and Outreach VISTA to help us create systems and pathways that will help the program be sustainable going forward. You'll help analyze what's currently happening, make recommendations about what to do next, and test and implement these new ideas.

AmeriCorps VISTA is a national program where community members have the opportunity to serve in local nonprofits for one year helping to eliminate poverty. In return for service, members receive a living allowance, health insurance, and other benefits.

Job Duties:

Volunteer Recruitment/Retention

  • evaluate the current methods for recruiting and retaining social media volunteers and community presenter volunteers
  • propose and implement ideas about where to improve, which may include drafting volunteer job descriptions, creating volunteer databases, creating volunteer recruitment flyers, applying for grants for volunteer appreciation or community incentives; developing press kits, or networking with partners (note: you certainly won't be able to implement all of these ideas; part of the assignment is to decide together with the Program Director which are worth the effort)
  • test the implementations and refine where needed

Partner Support

  • gather feedback from current partners about what they want and need to be able to successfully implement EveryDay Strong
  • work together with the organization’s graphic designer and other support staff as needed to create a downloadable, printable kit with everything a partner would need to “implement EveryDay Strong.” This may include developing posters, writing instructional handouts, or figuring out how to organize pre-existing content to be more accessible (similar to above: part of the assignment is to decide together with the Program Director where to focus our efforts)
  • test the kit with partners and refine as needed

About You:

The ideal candidate enjoys thinking about what's working and what's not and has the confidence to make recommendations about what to try next. Excellent problem-solving skills are a must.

Because our program relies heavily on marketing and outreach, applicants should have a basic knowledge and enjoyment of an area like social media management, journalism, blog-style writing, or graphic design.

Ideally, they will have experience volunteering in the community themselves. They will enjoy talking with and learning from others.

Our team believes strongly in a growth mindset and in on-the-job learning. As a result, personal characteristics like a willingness to learn and experiment, patience with uncertainty, a passion for mental health prevention, and demonstrated ability to think critically and creatively will weigh heavily in the application process. Candidates are encouraged to apply even if they are not certain they meet all the following qualifications.
