General Description Brief description of the job to be performed

Recruits families (youth ages 12-18 years and a caregiver) and young adults (ages 18-30) for two projects; conducts eligibility screenings and informed consent process. Gathers complete and accurate data through in-person interviews, questionnaires, standardized assessments, and urine samples for drug screening. Audio-tapes all in-person or phone assessments and submits them regularly to supervisor for review. Contacts and schedules appointments with participants in a timely manner according to study protocols. Under current COVID restrictions, conducts assessments by phone or Zoom. Travels to participants’ homes to collect urine samples following strict COVID safety protocols. When restrictions are lifted, will travel to participants’ homes or other community locations to conduct assessments. Participates in at least weekly meetings with supervisor by phone or Zoom. Stores data confidentially. Submits data and audiotapes via OSLC’s secure data network. Ships urine samples to lab for assay. Issues payments to participants. Position requires own vehicle for going to participant homes within Marion and Linn counties in Oregon. Will be reimbursed at the federal rate for work-related mileage. Works out of home; no office space provided.

Job Tasks

Essential Job Tasks to be performed

Meets with referred youth/caregivers or young adults to: explain the study, conduct eligibility screenings and obtain informed consent.

Stores and transmits paper and electronic data according to strict confidentiality procedures.

Contacts participants and schedules appointments according to study protocols.

Conducts computer-assisted assessments via Zoom, telephone, or in person within the required deadlines.

Participates in regular check-ins with supervisor by phone.

Develops and maintains positive, good working relations with participant families, JPOs and co-workers.

When COVID restrictions are lifted, travels to participants’ homes or other community locations to conduct assessments.

Audio-tapes all in-person and phone assessments and submits them regularly to supervisor.

Collects and ships or processes urine samples according to study protocols.

Communicates assessment-related details to supervisors in a timely manner according to study protocols.

Other project-related tasks as needed.

General Requirements

Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.

Must have the ability to attend to a high level of detail.

Work is monitored regularly; must be able to work independently while conducting assessments.

Requires a moderate level of interpretive judgment; will make some independent decisions or choices between existing methods and procedures.

Flexibility is required in regard to work schedule and time; must be able to accommodate the scheduling needs of participants.

Knowledge, skills, experience, education or training needed to perform job.

Level 4: 2 years education beyond high school with coursework appropriate to the position and 1-year related experience or equivalent combination of training and experience appropriate to the position.

Level 5: 2 years education beyond high school with coursework appropriate to the position and 2 years related experience or equivalent combination of training and experience appropriate to the position.

Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Experience in research or interviewing preferred.

Must have valid driver’s license and good driving record. Must use own vehicle for work travel; and must maintain adequate vehicle insurance.

Must be able to participate in 30-40 hours of paid training during October & November. Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, training well be conducted via teleconferencing (such as Zoom), on-line modules, and independent readings.

Physical Demands

Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.

Must be able to visually observe research participants’ interactions.

Must have the ability to be an active listener and document research participants’ answers accurately and precisely.

Must be able to physically access a variety of subjects’ homes, including climbing stairs to homes (# of steps will vary).

Must be able to sit for periods of time (about 2 hours during assessments).

Must be able to type or otherwise input data into a laptop computer.

Must be able to lift and carry assessment materials and equipment (including laptop computer, paper packets and kits for collection of urine samples); 10-15 pounds on a regular basis.

Must be able to kneel and crouch for short periods when conducing work-related activities.

Driving will be an essential function of this position; therefore, employee must comply with the OSLC Driving Policy, including:

Employee must have a valid Driver License.

Employee must provide current Declaration page showing the employees current insurance policy and coverage.

Policy must carry liability insurance of no less than $300,000 combined single limit or $300,000 personal injury and $100,000 property damage limits.

Employee must have and maintain a driving record that is within the parameters set by OSLC’s current liability insurance carrier.

Employee will use own personal transportation for local travel.

Standards and Expectations for person performing the job

After completion of training period, employee must be able to keep up with the average time allowed for the various assessments. These standards will be discussed during the training period.

After the training period, must be able to work 5-15 hours per week.

Must be able to work according to a flexible schedule that includes weekdays, weekends and evenings. Schedule of assessments varies according to the availability of the participants.

Must also be available to participate in at least weekly check-ins by phone with supervisor.

Carrying assessment equipment (laptop computer, audio-recorder, paper packets). Assessors visit a wide variety of home environments along the socioeconomic scale.
