Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum Collections/Archives Technician

Summary Position Statement:

Under the supervision of the Executive Director this position has the responsibility to assist in the inventory and documentation of 2D art in the Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum’s permanent collection. This position assists with record keeping and entries into the collections data base system. Collections Technician will be trained to use a collections management software in order to record inventory information, uploading digital photographs and catalog information. The Collections Technician will also assisting in making museum quality storage mounts for our 2D art collection.

This position is temporary for a term of approximately 18 weeks, effective immediately and works a part time schedule of 20 hours a week at a rate of $19 an hour. Work must be done within normal business hours, Monday through Friday.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Assist in the cataloging and photography of permanent collections.

Assist with the inventory of the permanent collection.

Create storage mounts for 2D art objects as needed.

Uphold museums standards in handling art and artifacts.

Consult with staff regarding collections database standards and procedures.

Non-essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Work directly with the collections staff in the safe handling and movement of collections objects.

Assists in maintaining safety and security in the Collections and exhibition areas.

Background Check: Because the Collections Technician will be working within a high security area of the museum, a security background check may be done of the applicant.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Proven ability to appropriately handle delicate objects as well as excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.

Understanding of standard museum practices.

Knowledge of and skill in handling objects and art.

Ability and skill in the use of computer systems and applications including knowledge of collections data base systems.

Skill in both verbal and written communication.

Ability to plan and organize work to meet schedules and timelines.

Work effectively as part of a team.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Museum Studies, History, Anthropology, Archaeology, Art, Art History or a related field

Candidates must possess good organizational skills, keen attention to detail

Working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office Suit.

Minimum 12 months experience working in a museum or related position.

Sensitivity when dealing with cultural materials.

Experienced art handler is not necessary but preferred.

Physical Demands:

The work environment and the physical demands of this position are typical of an office environment. Must be able to see to examine, evaluate, and care for art and artifacts. The employee is regularly required to stand; walk; and occasionally required to stoop, kneel, climb ladders, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include color and close vision, and ability to adjust focus.
