Organization Summary

Colorado Youth for a Change (CYC) is an educational nonprofit organization and our mission is to solve Colorado’s dropout crisis. Each year there are 10,000 youth leaving the school system in Colorado. Large bodies of research show that the lack of a high school diploma or GED considerably lowers a person’s employability and economic security throughout their lifetime often resulting in poorer overall health, unstable housing conditions, increased exposure to violence, and higher rates of poverty. Because even one student who drops out is one too many, we are committed to improving the dropout rate through thoughtful partnerships, dropout outreach & reengagement, educational intervention programs, and an expansion of high school options. Be the Change!

Corps for a Change (C4C) Program Overview

Every year, C4C serves 100’s of struggling high school students at risk of dropping out. These students are often facing multiple barriers and challenges that are impeding their ability to be successful at school and attend school more regularly. Our program exists to help connect these students to needed resources and to provide different solutions to directly address the barriers and challenges they are experiencing. The ultimate goal of the program is to help struggling high school students improve their overall attendance, pass their classes and become more engaged with their school community to put them on a path towards graduation. This program is based upon a passionate belief that with deserved community support, at risk youth can rise above seemingly insurmountable obstacles and achieve academic success, graduate, and go onto post-secondary education or other opportunities. (C4C is a formal AmeriCorps service opportunity managed by CYC.)

What is AmeriCorps?

A federal program consisting of a large network of different national community service programs that are focused on improving lives and the betterment of our communities. There are a several types of programs (from 3 months to 1 year in length) addressing different critical community needs from education to disaster recovery to helping veterans to fighting poverty. Similar to the military or Peace Corps, it is another way to serve your country. As an AmeriCorps member you will serve in one community program, in a full-time capacity.
