Wild Ginger Day Care: Enriching Experiences for Head, Heart and Hands

Substitute Day Care Assistant

Substitute specifics:

Be available to work on an as-needed basis. Occasionally workdays might be scheduled in advance, but it is more likely that the substitute would be called the night before or early the same morning they are needed to work. Be fairly likely to be available to work when called on.

There could be long stretches during which there is no work for the substitute; on the other hand there might be times when the substitute is needed for a month or so. Most likely there will be single days or a few days in a row that are needed every month or so.

Most often the substitute would be needed for a full workday (7:45-5:00), but there might be occasional times when only a few hours are needed.

If the substitute has a child that needs to come to work with them, it is likely that we can accommodate that. The regular child care rates would apply ($40 per child per day).

The other requirements, duties, and pay for a substitute assistant are the same as those for a regular assistant. See below.

Duties:

Assist licensed provider with the care of 7-12 children (infants – age 6, with school age-children in the summer) in her group day care home.

Assist with creative play, outdoor play, cooking, cleaning, dish washing, toileting and diapering, hand washing, nap time, songs, crafts, stories, nursery rhymes, woods walks, gardening, playing in mud, painting, dressing, sledding, and many other interesting ways of enjoying life.

Look at all aspects of the day as opportunities to help children learn about themselves and the world, and practice and refine their social, emotional, cognitive and physical skills.

Work with the licensed provider as a cooperative team, shifting tasks as needed and sharing ideas about how to make the day care work well and be a positive experience for the children, their families and us.

Work in a thoughtful way to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19 by making good hygiene, cleaning, and distancing (when feasible) habits a matter of course, but not creating an atmosphere of fear. Continue to look for ways we can improve in this area and share your ideas with the licensed provider.

Before working with children complete: adult, infant and child CPR and first aid certification; infant safe sleep training; blood borne pathogen training; training on child development and health and safety training required by the state; training in the Wild Ginger procedures to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. Renew CPR and first aid certification every two years. In addition, complete five hours of additional training each year related to child development and caring for children. Training will be paid.

Requirements:

Good judgment: ability to nurture children's independence, creativity and thinking, as well as their emotional, social, and physical development, while ensuring their health and safety.

Have a good rapport with young children: ability to understand what they want and need even if they aren't able to express it with words yet; be able to understand the situation from the child's point of view and work creatively to find solutions to problems.

Ability to engage young children and nourish their curiosity, imagination, and sense of wonder and delight.

Ability to remain more or less calm and happy (most of the time) in an environment that requires multi-tasking and shifting priorities.

Adaptability: willingness to try repeatedly to find fresh ways of working with the children.

Be exceptionally reliable, punctual and responsible.

Take precautions in your personal life, as well as while at work, to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

If offered a position, a TB test, criminal history background check and medical clearance will be required and must be passed before caring for children.

Hours: 7:45am – 5:00 pm.

Pay rate: $11 per hour is the base rate, which is paid when nine or fewer children are present. The pay rate increases when 10-12 children are present. It is $12 with 10 children; $13 with 11 children and; $14 with 12 children. Please note that due to COVID-19, I am currently planning to usually limit the number of children to 10 per day. If more than 40 hours are worked in one week, time and a half will be paid for the hours that are over 40.

Start date: As soon as a suitable candidate is found.
