Under the direction of the Detective Sergeant or assigned supervisor, participate in the receipt, storage, preservation, destruction and release of property and evidence to appropriate personnel or individuals in accordance with state laws and local ordinances.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Supervision is provided by the Detective Sergeant, or assigned supervisor. Perform routine duties with minimum supervision following established procedures and deadlines. Defined latitude to make decisions in non-routine situations requiring judgment. May perform lead duties for specific programs or assigned tasks; this position is not expected to perform supervisory duties of staff.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Receive items of evidence collected by deputies; inventory and log all items; mark and store in appropriate manner for security and quick retrieval.
Secure all evidence to maintain the proper chain of custody, preservation, storage, and transportation for court presentation and testimony; release evidence for court purposes and laboratory analysis. Testify in court on these issues as required by subpoena.
Receive and store money, narcotics, and other items of sensitive nature in appropriate manner to ensure their security.
Prepare, transport, and submit evidence for processing at laboratory facilities, when necessary.
Track the disposition of criminal cases to determine the appropriate disposition of evidence and property in accordance with state statutes, and agency policies. Interpret court orders pertaining to dispositions.
Receive, inventory, and secure abandoned or found property; compare articles with serial numbers and descriptive features; attempt to locate owners of property and return property to owner as directed.
Perform filing and other clerical functions necessary to maintain an orderly, clean, organized, and secure environment for the storage of evidence and property.
Prepare an inventory for public auction of all unclaimed, abandoned or found property; participate in regularly scheduled property auctions.
Destroy narcotics and unclaimed/unsold firearms following carefully prescribed court orders and statutory procedures.
Assist in advising agency personnel of the laws and policies of evidential property control.
Assist agency personnel in packaging evidence for submission, when directed to do so.
Package, label and ship property articles to other agencies, cities or states as required.
Store and maintain safety equipment used in the collection and storage of evidence and property.
Recommend changes in policies and procedures for evidence room activities.
Direct the release of impounded property to citizens, sworn deputies, and other law enforcement agencies.
Complete evidence audits as directed by statute, policy, or supervisor instructions. Compile necessary periodic reports.
Attend staff meetings when required to do so.
Order and maintain inventory of uniforms and equipment as needed.
Order, prepare, inventory and issue initial issue uniforms, equipment, academy attire, and other supplies as needed.
Maintain detailed reports of purchases, both uniform and equipment, and keep the Chief Civil Deputy informed of orders and invoices.
Attend State certified evidence training

QUALIFICATIONS

Ability to research and resolve problems without precedent or historical practice.
Knowledge & Abilities
Knowledge of general office practices.
Knowledge of general law enforcement procedures.
Knowledge of chain of evidence.
Must be able to communicate clearly, concisely and effectively.
Knowledge of pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations.
Knowledge of principles and procedures of storage and record keeping in a secured environment
Ability to maintain accurate accounting of property and evidence.
Ability to respond to requests and inquiries from the public using tact, patience, and courtesy.
Establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship with those contacted in the course of completing job duties.
Must have capacity to maintain strictest confidentiality related to information/materials handled.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS
Graduation from a high school or GED
United States citizen
At least 18 years of age
Computer keyboard proficiency
Good grasp of English language, both oral and written
Must meet minimum medical and health standards adopted by the Chelan County Civil Services Commission and successfully pass a background investigation.
Must pass entrance examination
SALARY & BENEFITS: A091 Step 1- 4, $3273.53 - $3789.31/month.
