Job Description

The Director, Strategic-Scientific Services, working closely with cross-functional teams (Client, Editorial, and Creative Services), will provide strategic direction and content development support for medical communications activities. The Director possesses an expert understanding of client needs within an evolving marketplace, developing rigorous scientific content that positively differentiates current and emerging brands. Working across therapeutic areas and products, the Director helps deliver such client-ready solutions as medical affairs activity plans, scientific communications platforms, advisory board and expert engagement plans, slide decks, and literature reviews. Additionally, the Director works with Scientific Services (Publications), providing support consistent with the needs of the client and Synchrony Medical Communications. In consultation with senior management, the Director provides direction and support for new business opportunities.

Job Duties

  • Take responsibility for the quality, execution, and delivery of medical communications deliverables
  • Ensure that Synchrony Medical Communications contains the highest caliber strategic-scientific support
  • Support medical-scientific strategy for publications plans, scientific communications platforms, and related medical affairs initiatives
  • Provide primary content development support for medical communication activities
  • Work with other senior members to ensure that Synchrony is operating according to its corporate goals, objectives, and values
  • Assist senior leadership with the design and implementation of corporate strategies
  • Assist with proactive prioritization and problem-solving to meet client expectations
  • Collaborate with writers, scientific directors, editors, and creative department personnel to ensure accuracy and quality of medical communications content
  • Foster and develop collaboration among departments, internal groups, and individuals to ensure innovative client solutions
  • Represent company at new business pitches and other client meetings as appropriate
  • Develop client scope of service or project agreements with client services directors
  • Lead assigned cross-functional teams in support of client needs

Business Development

  • Support business development initiatives to increase revenue to meet and exceed company goals
  • Support teams and resources to create and submit responses to requests for proposals (RFPs/RFIs) as well as unsolicited proposals (proposal writing is required), and to develop and present capabilities presentations
  • Contribute to Synchrony Group cross-selling, new business development, and revenue growth for both new and existing clients
  • Support the development of new-business presentations including leadership of support teams for analyzing and synthesizing literature, therapeutic area assessment, pharmacologic attributes of products, clinical research data, and market research into a strategic application for capabilities
  • Support capabilities presentations, pharmaceutical briefings, and other new business–related meetings

Internal and External Relationships

  • Accountabilities include medical-scientific strategic for publication planning, medical communications, and medical education planning as well as medical-scientific content development for medical communications and medical education activities
  • Support key internal committees pertaining to new business development and client services
  • Work with other members of senior management to ensure that Synchrony Medical Communications is meeting its company goals and objectives, and adhering to corporate values
  • Foster and develop collaboration among departments, internal groups, and individuals to ensure innovative and collaborative solutions to client needs
  • Be a positive force for enhancing work culture, consensus-building, and internal communications
  • Facilitate communication among team members and clients necessary to maintain strong relationships and effective client management
  • Resolve conflict and celebrate successes; set clear team priorities; explain brand objectives and strategies; define success in terms of the whole team
  • Keep senior management apprised of client concerns and opportunities
  • Attend client meetings and conventions, and communicate key learnings to team and client
  • Actively participate in client presentations, providing insight into strategy and communicating and defending Synchrony’s point of view when necessary
  • Establish, meet and foster high expectations for integrity, conduct, and quality of work

Qualifications

  • PharmD, PhD, or MD
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in medical communications or other related disciplines
  • Ability to travel extensively as client needs require
  • Substantial experience in traditional multichannel medical affairs activities, including medical communications initiatives, strategic communication planning and support, advisory boards, expert identification and engagement, and strategic literature reviews

Working Conditions

  • Travel requirements will vary with client needs and corporate strategy
  • Significant communication with clients and internal teams
  • Overtime as required
