Launched in 2004, the Broad Institute is a non-profit biomedical and genomic research organization spanning Harvard, MIT, and Harvard-affiliated hospitals.
Home to more than 3,000 scientists and staff, Broad researchers generate on the order of 20 terabytes of sequence data every day to improve human health by using genomics to advance our understanding of the biology and treatment of human disease, and to help lay the groundwork for a new generation of therapies.
Broad Information Technology Services (BITS) is looking for a database administrator who is strong at building out replication and optimizing throughput on on-premise and cloud hardware.
The ideal candidate is a diligent and creative problem solver, an enthusiastic learner and energized by technical challenges and high-impact work.
Characteristic Duties (both on-premise and cloud environments)
Design, manage and administer on-premise and cloud databases, including base definition, structure, documentation, long-range requirements, operational guidelines, protection and architecture
Ensure accuracy and completeness of data across the organization’s databases
Define and specify database access, structure and functional capabilities
Formulate and monitor policies, procedures and standards relating to database management
Optimize database configuration and access
Analyze, tune and sustain capacity and performance requirements, resolve database performance and capacity issues
Performs database backup and recovery, restore and recover corrupted databases. And maintain sound backup and recovery policies and procedures
Install, configure and upgrade Oracle, MySQL and MongoDB server software and related products.
Monitor and troubleshoot problems to ensure continuous operation of database servers and related functions
Interface with Oracle Corporation for technical support
Develop database utilities and automated reporting
Desired Experience
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, or equivalent experience
3-5 years experience administering Oracle databases, or recent training on Oracle best practices
Experience with MySQL and MongoDB administration
Linux administration experience, especially in relation to database deployments on Linux
VMWare concepts and experiences running a database in a virtualized environment
At least 1 year of enterprise Cloud, DevOps, and management of Relational Databases
Exposure to web-based client development environments such as APEX, Python, HTML, Java or JavaScript preferred
Experience in any of the following is desirable : bioinformatics, laboratory information systems (LIMS), and industrial automation
Required Qualifications
Understanding of Agile / Scrum practices
Ability to multitask, manage time and follow through with assignments
