Overview

The Supported Education Specialist assists people with a mental health diagnosis to begin or return to school for post-secondary education. Provides guidance for these students and prospective students to develop an educational plan or a career path. Assists students with setting their educational goals, navigating the college system, and continues to support them through the educational process in order to achieve success.

Responsibilities

Establish education goals with Supported Education participants; develop implementation plans including support and accommodation requirements, and complete an educational assessment for each student.

Assist students with registration, financial aid, and other educational institution requirements as needed.

Assess students’ strengths, learning and resource needs to meet education goals. Monitor progress of students and modify plans as needed.

Advocate and negotiate for students in both education and mental health settings. Act as a liaison between college staff and community partners.

Work collaboratively within the post-secondary education system.

Provide educational presentations to community partners and college staff.

Participate in weekly treatment team meetings. Attend RCC/SOU Counseling Department meetings if required and required trainings/workshops.

Qualified Master's level candidates may prepare mental health assessments and treatment plans for assigned clients.

Manages time effectively. Works independently and flexibly, under general supervision. Submits timely documentation of services provided using Electronic Health Records and other data tracking processes.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a sense of how the business community works, have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be sincerely motivating to helping others attain meaningful, competitive work.

Master's degree in psychology or a related field a plus. Bachelor's (BA/BS) degree in a human services field OR education and experience that provides the desired skills, knowledge and abilities required to perform the job will be considered. Knowledge of the post-secondary education system a plus.

Must be a QMHA on the Mental Health & Addictions Certification Board of Oregon (MHACBO) registry.

Must pass state-required background and DMV checks; possess a valid OR driver's license and a satisfactory driving record to transport clients. Candidate must be able to work independently and flexibly, under general supervision.
