Conduct advanced physical and chemical testing on refinery wide process streams including intermediate and product samples. Support laboratory operations through demonstration of a high level of technical competence that exemplifies analytical excellence and inspires laboratory staff to an equivalent level of quality analysis. Offer technical oversight of methods of analysis, calibration techniques and statistical evaluations to support a technical teamwork environment that is aligned with data quality objectives of laboratory management. Display leadership stature. This position will strongly support and promote mission and visionary goals that are unified with that of laboratory management.Safely conduct both routine and non-routine, frequently complex, physical and chemical testing of petroleum products and processing materials.

Recognize off test analysis and understand unit sample loading and sample schedules.

Knowledge of process samples and sample points.

Develop and advise additional analytical tests to aid in solving process related problems.

Proficiency with advanced laboratory instruments with emphasis on FID, TCD and SCD Gas Chromatography, Mass Spectroscopy, Emission Spectroscopy, Ion Chromatography, Combustion Fluorescence and Combustion Chemiluminescence methods of analysis.

Possess LIMS proficiency in sample login, data entry and SQC charting.

Effectively communicate and interpret, both written and verbally, analysis results to customers and refinery technical personnel.

Validate, operate and maintain instrumentation and equipment within the laboratory to minimize errors in chemical analysis.

Develop/maintain instrument methods and produce/provide Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) documents accordingly.

Comprehensively understand and implement the most current ASTM methods utilized in the laboratory for petroleum finished product testing.

Assist/participate in the collection of special samples from operating units.

Observe and analyze current laboratory practices and give direction towards more accurate, rapid, and ultimately safer methods of sample collection and handling.

Train Lab Technicians in new methods of analysis.

Fill in for Laboratory Technicians as required. Maintain proficiency at the Lab Technician level.

Assist Laboratory Manager in purchasing new instrumentation or software by contacting vendors, writing AFEs (Authorization For Expenditures), and developing purchase justifications.

Attend all safety and laboratory training sessions and fulfill testing requirements.

Maintain a neat, clean and well-organized and professional-looking work area.

Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biology, or Bio-Chemistry required. Degree in Chemistry and minimum 2 years petroleum refining experience preferred. Possessing mechanical talent is desirable.
