Employment Type:Part timeShift:Description:POSITION PURPOSEProvides clinical formulations that reflect an understanding of behavioral and psychodynamic theory and treatment applications that are based upon a broad understanding of dynamics related to behavior and change. The therapist collaborates with clinical leadership in planning and facilitating the patient’s receipt of appropriate therapeutic services.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIESProvides individual psychotherapy to children, adolescents, adults and older adults, as qualified under unit-based privileging criteria. May lead or co-lead psychotherapy, support or education groups

Provides patient care with attention to recipient’s age-specific, developmental, cultural, and/or other special needs or circumstances

Completes patient related documentation in accordance with department and hospital policy, in a timely fashion, and with content that is focused on relevant issues

Demonstrates ability to make appropriate and useful changes in the patient’s treatment plan when problems persist, and recognizes when discharge and/or transfer of care is in the best interest of the patient

Understands legal issues that affect treatment, including but not limited to child custody, divorce laws, child/adult abuse, duty to warn, recipient rights policies and procedures, alternative treatment orders (ATO’s), and the commitment process for hospitalization

May supervise student interns from own discipline/provide case-specific supervision of student interns of any discipline

Assures that all treatment provided is authorized for insurance payment and/or that alternate payment plans are in place

Maintains a productivity rate in accordance with department and/or unit policy

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION/LICENSURERequires Master’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, or Nursing, with specialty training in psychotherapy as evidenced by transcript or equivalent documentation. Minimum of one graduate course in psychodynamic theory, one graduate course in psychotherapy, or equivalent experience, as operationally defined in current Mental Health Outpatient Clinic and one course in lifespan personality development (including child, adolescent, and older adult development) privileging criteria. Competent under current Outpatient Mental Health privileging criteria to provide at least one of the following specialized modes of treatment: group, couples, family systems, consultation/liaison, biofeedback/behavioral-medicine, cognitive-behavioral, or a defined, recognized “ultrabrief” modality. Current professional credentials and state licensure sufficient to meet Blue Cross reimbursement criteria. As required, eligible to be privileged by Department of Psychiatry as an Allied Health Professional in psychotherapy. 2,000 supervised contact hours providing individual psychotherapy; two years experience working in a multidisciplinary mental health setting, or equivalent as operationally defined in current Outpatient Mental Health Clinic privileging criteria. Must be licensed in the State of Michigan.REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIESDemonstrated knowledge and ability to utilize at least two distinct modalities of psychotherapy, one of which must be an individual modality. Sufficient grasp of psychodynamic theories to be able to explain the basic structure and dynamics of a clinical case. Psychotherapy skills sufficient to function with minimal direct supervision, except for the most difficult treatment problems. Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with SJMHS and outside agency professionals, patients and families Written and verbal communication skills necessary to allow for comprehensive clinical documentation and effective communication with others. Analytical skills necessary to determine patients’ condition and to provide advanced assessment and intervention services. Efficient, disciplined work habits enabling clinician to responsibly sustain an active, high-volume caseload. Seeks out and accepts supervision, continuing professional development, and continual improvement of own and agency’s practices and operations; consistently collaborates in multidisciplinary treatment planning and professional practice review.
