The Senior Mechanical Engineer will contribute to the design and development of General Compute server components, their integration into building blocks and racks, and support the test and validation teams to ensure their successful deployment in Azure datacenters. The successful candidate has a track record of working in multi-disciplinary teams on product development from concept through production and is well grounded in the fundamentals of mechanical engineering and tackling technical challenges. In alignment with our Microsoft values, we are committed to cultivating an inclusive work environment for all employees to positively impact our culture every day.ResponsibilitiesIn this role, you will utilize your design and analysis skills to take ownership of mechanical projects from concept to production, working with a team of engineers to develop innovative solutions for Microsoft’s cloud hardware infrastructure. You will utilize your engineering expertise to conceptualize and communicate design intent to hardware teams and perform what-if scenarios that is typical in early product development. Working in conjunction with our ODM and SI partners, you will design mechanical components, systems, and assemblies using CAD software and create prototypes for testing and validation and facilitate their introduction into our products. You will create mechanical specifications and interface control documents and drive best practices for mechanical design across our product portfolio while ensuring compliance with regulatory and safety standards. You will be conducting design reviews, generating engineering documentation and developing test plans and reports including formulating DOEs, analyzing data and driving timely decision making to meet project schedules. Your designs will focus on ensuring part commonality, serviceability and safety, without compromising performance. You will be responsible for proactively selecting and evaluating materials to support Microsoft’s sustainability initiative and drive the re-use of materials across product families and product generations. As a senior mechanical engineer, you will perform structural statics and dynamics simulations to guide design improvements and maintain adequate design margin against likely failure mechanisms. You will collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams including external vendors and suppliers to source components, lead design strategy, ensure robust performance prediction, review manufacturing processes, and ensure adherence to quality standards. You will provide engineering support to NPI teams by troubleshooting component and systems issues to enable a seamless integration of designs from development into production. QualificationsRequired Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related technical engineering experience

OR Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related technical engineering experience

OR Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, or related field

OR equivalent experience.

4+ years of experience developing specifications, interface control documents, and managing design requirements related to server components and systems design.

4+ years of CAD(PTC Creo/Solidworks) and simulation tools (Ansys/Abaqus), sound understanding of mechanical design principles, ANSI Y14.5 GD&T, Tolerance analysis, manufacturing processes(sheet metal processing, plastic injection molding, stamping, die casting, extrusions),conducting DOEs, Testing and Validation

Other Requirements: Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.  Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or a related field. Master's in Mechanical Engineering or a relevant discipline preferred

10+ years in mechanical design and analysis for complex hardware systems, with a focus on cloud or HPC infrastructure

Proficiency in mechanical CAD design tools (PTC Creo preferred, Solidworks)

Structural statics and dynamics background. Experience (>1 yr) with structural FEA simulation tools (Ansys/Abaqus)

Familiarity with cloud infrastructure, data center operations, and related technologies, such as server racks, power distribution, cooling systems, and cable management

Experience in all phases of the Product Development Cycle - concept design, prototyping, testing and validation, design regression, NPI

Experience guiding and partnering with ODMs including driving design, prototyping and validation activities

Experience with air and liquid cooled systems in servers

Experience with high volume manufacturing of enclosures for electronics systems

Experience in sheet metal processes, PCB manufacturing, plastic injection molding, die casting, stamping

Mechanical Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $117,200 - $229,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year.
