For more information about the AGO, you can review the Office's Annual Report, which can be found HERE.The University of Washington Division of the AGO (“Division”) provides comprehensive legal services to the University of Washington (“UW”), which operates three campuses (Seattle, Tacoma, and Bothell) and a large medical enterprise. UW enrolls more than 60,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students, employs over 45,000 faculty and staff, and is ranked among the best higher education research institutions in the country. The Division’s office is located in the University District in Seattle.The Division is comprised of 20 assistant attorneys general (“AAGs”), who are organized into three teams (General Practice, Employment, and Healthcare), and 10 support personnel. The Division provides legal advice and representation across a variety of specialized areas related to UW’s broad array of operations and activities, including healthcare, employment law, labor relations, student affairs, admissions, real estate, compliance and risk services, ADA, Title IX, business law, intercollegiate athletics, public finance, bonds, intellectual property, tax, benefits, IT, gifts and trusts, and constitutional law.POSITION DESCRIPTION The position we seek to fill is the Paralegal 2 (NE S CNU) . This position provides expert level legal support functions for attorneys, including responding to subpoenas and other legal documents, reviewing public records requests, and preparing materials for various administrative hearings, while applying independent judgment in completing other complex tasks and projects.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Perform complex paralegal support activities under the supervision of AAGs.

Review and redact documents responsive to public records requests.

Work with AAGs to assist UW in responding to subpoenas, including communicating with UW staff to obtain responsive documents, communicating with counsel who issued the subpoena, and reviewing, redacting, and producing documents.

Calendar litigation critical events/dates and monitor cases to ensure no critical deadlines are missed. Work with AAGs and legal assistants to identify next steps in litigation and/or adjudicatory process.

Review litigation and subpoena files and critically analyze and summarize complex legal and factual issues, questions, and strategies. Contact client representatives, if necessary, to clarify issues or obtain additional information. Conduct discovery to gather relevant information and documents. Correspond with others, including potential witnesses and outside counsel. Prepare written analyses of complex legal issues, facts, policies, nature of the case, jurisdiction, remedy sought, potential witnesses, etc. Review and analyze additional evidence provided by opposing parties.

Interpret and explain complex court rules, policies, and operating procedures.

Navigate federal and state court sites to search for case dockets and retrieve copies of court pleadings.

Assist with reviewing case citations.

Help draft letters, pleadings, and other documents including, but not limited to, affidavits, motions, memoranda, and contracts.

Conduct legal and other technical research utilizing Westlaw, library resources, and the internet.

Assist attorneys in preparing for, and taking part in, meetings, hearings, etc.

Within established guidelines, respond to requests for information and for copies of documents, statutes, and cases, and answers general questions regarding legal matters and status of cases.

Field incoming calls and provides assistance to clients, outside counsel, etc. in the absence of the attorney.

Other duties as assigned. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Combination of four years of experience through paralegal certification, two-year paralegal degree, and/or paraprofessional experience in support of an attorney.OR

Three years’ experience as a Paralegal 1. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Prior experience working for a public governmental agency or higher education institution.

High proficiency with computers and MS Word, Databases, Outlook, Excel, and Law Manager.

Excellent communication and organizational skills.

Attention to Detail.

Ability to keep calm under pressure.
