    Duties

    Summary

    Serves as a senior wildland firefighter on a helitack module.

    This is a Permanent Career Seasonal position with a full-time work schedule. Career-Seasonal positions are guaranteed to work at least 6 months but not more than 50 weeks per year and include all the benefits of permanent employment. The typical season is May thru October, but can vary due to workload and funding.

    Responsibilities

    Serves as a Senior Wildland Firefighter on a helitack crew.

    • Performs wildland fire suppression, management, and control.
    • Performs as a chainsaw operator and chainsaw repair technician.
    • Operates and maintains specialized tools and equipment.
    • Performs all aspects of wildland and prescribed fire operations.
    • Gathers fire weather data, fuel types, and fire behavior in response to wildland fire incidents.
    • Participates in crew proficiency checks and drills, safety sessions, and fire critiques.
    • Operates a variety of motor vehicles to transport equipment, supplies, module/crew members.

    This position will be located at park headquarters in Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park . Elevation at Mammoth is 6,200 feet. Temperatures vary from an average of 70 degrees Fahrenheit in summer to sub-zero at times in winter. A school is available, with kindergarten through 12, in Gardiner , Montana , five miles north of headquarters. Free bus transportation is provided for school children between Mammoth and Gardiner. Many community facilities such as stores, a drugstore, day care, motels, and restaurants are available in Gardiner. A medical clinic is available in Mammoth. All other services are available within 55 to 75 miles from Mammoth. OCCUPANCY OF GOVERNMENT HOUSING IS NOT REQUIRED WITH THIS POSITION. Housing may be available through the Yellowstone National Park bid process.

    • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
    • Selectees may be expected to travel in (not pilot) a small single-engine or rotor winged aircraft.
    • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.

    Qualifications

    All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-11/02/2020-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

    Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience.     This position has been identified as one of the key fire management positions under the Interagency Fire Program management (IFPM) Standard. This position has been categorized as a Senior Wildland Firefighter and requires selectee to meet the minimum qualification standards for IFPM prior to being placed into the position.     Currency is required. You will be required to obtain and maintain currency for the NWCG qualifications listed above.-AND-Maximum Entry Age: This position is covered by the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336 (c) and 5 U.S.C. 8412 (d) as a Primary/Rigorous Firefighter. Applicants must not have reached their 37th birthday upon appointment to this position unless there is sufficient prior Federal service in a covered position to permit retirement on or before the mandatory retirement age for this type of position. An exception is allowed if you are a qualified veteran preference eligible.- AND -

    In addition, you must possess at least one or all of the following minimum qualifications by close of announcement:GS-0462-05:Specialized Experience: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 level in the Federal service. Examples of qualifying specialized for this position is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position and must have included work in or directly related to forest or range fire control, prevention or suppression. Work such as: personally performing and/or leading others in one or more of the following wildland fire-fighting functions: serving as a member of a fire suppression hand-crew, serving as a member of a prescribed fire crew; serving as a member of a wildland fire engine crew; serving as a member of a wildland fire helitack crew; senior forestry technician or comparable position performing wildland firefighting or other related work. NOTE: If your firefighting experience includes both structural and wildland, it is essential that your application materials clearly separate and document your wildland experience.

    OREducation: a full 4-year course of study above high school (120 semester hour or 180 quarter hours) leading to a bachelor's degree with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture or a subject-matter field directly related to the position (e.g., fire science, suppression and prevention), or that included at least 24 semester hours of course work in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable toward the 24 hours. Related course work are subjects such as forestry, fire science, suppression and prevention or other closely related subjects pertinent to the fire management and protection of forest and range resources. The two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to l year of specialized experience. NOTE: If you are using education to qualify you must submit a copy of your transcripts (A copy of your official transcripts will be required before entrance on duty, if selected).

    ORCombination: An equivalent combination of education and experience. For example, six months of the specialized experience described above (50% of the experience requirement), and three years of college study from an accredited institution, which included at least 12 semester hours of related coursework as described above (50% of the qualifying education). NOTE: Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. NOTE: If you are using education to qualify you must submit a copy of your transcripts (A copy of your official transcripts will be required before entrance on duty, if selected).Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

    If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

    Physical Demands: Essential functions require arduous exertion for protracted periods of time such as extensive running, walking, climbing, kneeling, stooping, pulling hoses, jumping and twisting. Duties involve rigorous fieldwork requiring above average physical performance, endurance and superior conditioning. Must lift and carry items weighing over 50 pounds and shared lifting and carrying of heavier items. Duties include demands for activities in emergencies under adverse environmental conditions and over extended periods of time. Operations of some specialized fire equipment can place extended physical stress on employee during fire activities.Working Conditions: The work is primarily performed in forest, range and desert environments in steep terrain where surfaces may be extremely uneven, rocky, covered with vegetation, and in smoky conditions, etc. Temperatures vary from above 100 degrees F to below freezing. Risks include smoke inhalation and fire entrapment. Employee must adjust and cope with exposure to weather elements, dust and smoke, poor sleeping and eating conditions and unpredictable sets of circumstances. Employee may be required to live in backcountry camps for extended periods of time.
